Chapter 179 [Vault]

[3rd POV]

After a rather long run and interacting with what was basically a floating ball of wires, as well as some weird alien that ran off after the Doctor got a good look at it. 

But now Alexandria was sitting, watching in silent excitement as the Doctor was putting together her sonic screwdriver, all made out of nothing but scraps found in a garage, a garage they had also found the dead body of the man that took the strange egg looking thing that Graham had found. 

Watching her create the sonic was…incredible, as she made sure to remember every single detail, every single thing she did, so that she too could create one for herself in the future. She could already see the things that she could do with it, and the ways in which she could potentially improve upon it. 

Creating one for herself would have to come later, as she watched the Doctor in silence. As sparks flew and immense heat was thrown about in order to melt certain materials needed to properly create the sonic. 

Soon, the process was complete, as Alexandria stared at the sonic screwdriver next to the grinning Doctor. 

“…You’re incredible” Alexandria said simply, as the Doctor blinked several times, glancing over at the smiling Alexandria. 

“I-uh-well thank you!” The Doctor said, stuttering over her words a bit, a small dusting of pink painting her cheeks before she coughed awkwardly and shook it off. 

Lifting the sonic, she walked out of the makeshift room they were in, out to where Graham and Grace. 

“Ta Da!” The Doctor said, activating the screwdriver, only for it to spark slightly, but still work. 

“Ooh…should be fine” The Doctor said with an amusing expression on her face. 

Before Alexandria could ask why it did that, Ryan’s voice came from afar. 

“Hey, we found a load of stuff” Ryan said from what looked to be an office or something of the sort. 

Hearing this, they all looked at one another before following after him, into the office, as a video began to play on the screen, showing a man holding the camera. 

“It’s come back. The thing I saw the night my sister…Everyone always says “Disappeared” but I know she was taken. Seven years now. Tracking energy signals, building predictive programs, so that I’d know when the atmospheric disruptions matched what happened that day. But tonight it came back again and I’ve got it. I am going to find out what happened to my sister. If anything happens to me, her name was Asha. Don’t let anyone else go through this” The video stopped there, as the screen cut to black. 

“He knew that he might die from what he was doing” Alexandria said softly, feeling bad for the man that had simply been doing this for his sister. 

“She was his family” The Doctor said as she looked at a photo of him and his sister during what seemed to be a graduation or something of the sort. 

“Let’s see what this thing is then, and maybe find out how to stop this from happening to anyone else” The Doctor said, moving over to what looked to be a small platform like structure. 

“Did you just make that?” Ryan asked, as he had been in the office the entire time and hadn’t seen her working. 

“Sonic Screwdriver. Well, I say Screwdriver, but it’s a bit more multi-purpose than that. Scanner, diagnostics, tin opener. More of a sonic Swiss Army knife. Only without the knife, only idiots carry knives” The Doctor replied, as Alexandria looked over the platform, being able to see how it was made, but understood little of how it worked or why it did. 

“What were you doing with it?” Ryan asked. 

“Mapping the distance this object has travelled. It looks like it started over 5,000 galaxies away” The Doctor responded, as Alexandria listened to every word, interested in every little thing the Doctor had said. 

“How can you tell?” Yaz asked, confused on how The Doctor could use a screwdriver to tell this sort of thing, even if it was a high tech one. 

“That bit there, recall circuitry. It’s designed for a return journey” The Doctor said, pointing at some small glowing crystal like objects. 

“So whatever killed that bloke will have to come back here?”

”Question is, why did it leave? What is it looking for?” The Doctor asked out loud, as Alexandria hummed. 

“Or who” Alexandria said, causing the Doctor to stop and look at her. 

“Repeat that?”

”I said “Or Who”. The video said that his sister had gone missing, right? What if it’s not looking for something, but someone?” Alexandria asked, as the Doctor went silent. 

“Okay, then. It looks like we might have an alien war on our hands, or something of the sort. 2 aliens, 1 night? Too many coincidences. Meaning, they’re likely looking for one another. Perhaps this happened 7 years ago, rehashing a previous battle” The Doctor muttered, before moving around and beginning to gather things. 

“So what do we do? Because this is my home, and I’d rather not it become an alien battleground” Yaz asked, as The Doctor replied without turning around. 

“We stop them meeting, capture them, send them home, away from each other and away from Earth”

”How do we do that?” Ryan asked. 

“Well, give me a minute. I’m working on it” 

“Not to sound like a stuck record, but can I just ask about these DNA bombs? Like, how long do we have left?” Graham asked as The Doctor turned back to them. 

“Enough questions! You lot, you love to chat, I get it. Lots to do, I’m working on it all. And I haven’t forgotten about your collar bones, Graham. Give me nine minutes, a bit of quiet, and I’ll be ready to roll. Scouts honor” The Doctor said, as Alexandria fought back a giggle at the expression on their faces.

Later, after finding what were known as “Gathering Coils” as well as a run in with a Stenza known as “Tzim-Sha” aka Tim Shaw, and the Doctor realizing that Alexandria was right, that he was hunting not the coils, but Karl from the train, the group were at the construction site that the man worked out. 

Looking down at the corpse of a man, as Karl’s voice echoed from the radio, The Doctor looked at the body in remorse, before shaking her head, focusing on what was more important at the moment. 

“It’s over there” Ryan said, pointing to a crane before Graham noticed something else. 

“And that creature is guarding the bottom of it”

“Graham, Grace, I need you to take this equipment and get everybody off this site. Don’t care how, use your initiative. Do not come back in, understand?” The Doctor said as they nodded.

”Alexa, Ryan, Yaz, how are you three with machinery and heights?” The Doctor began, as the three of them looked at eachother, before The Doctor looked back. 

“Alright c’mon, I’ll explain more when we’re there!” The Doctor said as she began to run off, causing the three of them to run after her, and to the crane. 

Getting to the crane moments later, they all looked up, before the Doctor began to speak as she began to climb up a bit. 

“That tentacley thing is guarding Karl’s crane, so we go up this one”

”What do we do when we get up there?” Yaz asked as Alexandria began to climb after the Doctor, trusting her. 

“Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan”

”Really?”

”Well, I will have by the time we get to the top” The Doctor replied as Alexandria fought back a laugh as she began to climb after the Doctor, with Yaz behind/under her, and Ryan under Yaz. 

And after a few more minutes of climbing, they made it to the top. 

“Ahahaha! We made it! Oh! Oh, no, no, no! It’s way to high up here” Ryan said in fear, while Yaz looked to the Doctor. 

“What’s the plan? You said you’d have a plan!”

”Nearly. Nearly, nearly” The Doctor muttered, before snapping as she got one. 

“I got one. I climb on to the arm of this crane, you swing the arm around next to Karl’s crane. Karl steps across, you swing the arm my way. I get him back in here, all back down for a cuppa and a fried egg sandwich. I’m really craving a fried egg sandwich. simple, no?” The Doctor rambled, as Alexandria opened her mouth before shutting it. 

“Not really” Yaz responded. 

“All right. It’s a work in progress. But so is life. It’ll be fine. Oh, I got these downstairs, one must work. You can figure out how to work a crane right? Go!” The Doctor said, handing Yaz a thing of keys, before running off and beginning to climb the crane again. 

“I’m going to follow her so she doesn’t get herself killed” Alexandria said as she moved passed the two of them, and began to follow the Doctor up. 

“Hey why are you following me?” The Doctor asked as she noticed Alexandria. 

“Because I’d rather not you get yourself killed up there by yourself” Alexandria said from below as the Doctor was about to refute, but seeing Alexandria’s determined look, she stopped and just continued to climb up. 

Getting up to where the crane’s “Arm” was, The Doctor looked over the edge, cringing as she did so “Yup, way too high!” The Doctor said as Alexandria moved next to her. 

“Best not to look down, it’ll make this a lot harder than it needs to be” Alexandria said, pulling the Doctor away as the woman looked at her before nodding. 

As they got towards the end of the crane arm, the crane began to move, only, it was going the wrong way. “Wrong way! Wrong way! Wrong Way!” The Doctor yelled down, hoping they’d hear her. 

And it seemed they did understand, as the crane began to move back, as the two reached the end of the crane arm. 

Seeing Karl at the end of the other crane, The Doctor began “Hiya! Again!”

”What’s going on!?” Karl exclaimed in response. 

“When the arms line up, just step across” The Doctor replied, only the crane soon screeched to a halt, as the power of the crane went down thanks to the creature below. 

“How am I going to get across there now?!” Karl exclaimed in fear. 

“When I said “Step” obviously, I meant jump. Jump across” The Doctor said back to him. 

“I can’t do that!” The man replied, gripping the crane for dear life. 

“Of course you can. Stand up, quick jump. Chop chop! I’ll catch you” The Doctor said back to him. 

“I don’t know! I’m not great with heights!”

”What?”

”It’s my dad’s company” He said, only for the stomping of Tim Shaw to sound out behind him as he had reached the crane arm. 

“Pop on over!” The Doctor said, as the man was much more willing now that Tim Shaw was there. 

Seeing this, the man soon jumped, only for Tim Shaw to leap forward and grip his shirt, dragging him back up to the crane, and began to drag him across. 

“Let him go!” The Doctor yelled, as Tim Shaw ignored her and began to walk away. 

“Alright, you ready to do this no name woman?” Alexandria asked, looking to the Doctor who nodded, as Alexandria sprinted full force, leaping over the ledge, and onto the next crane, pulling herself up. 

The Doctor soon did the same, as she pulled her upwards, the others watching with wide eyes as they did so. 

“Oi! Tim Shaw! You stop right there!” The Doctor yelled to the alien as it slowed to a halt. 

Turning back to the Doctor, he pulled his mask off, revealing a face that was covered in teeth, something that Karl noticed. 

“Oh! He’s got a face of teeth!”

”I know. I’ve got this” The Doctor said, giving Alexandria a nod. 

“Let him go, or I destroy…this” The Doctor said, only to blink as she reached into her coat, not finding the thing she was looking for as she began to look through it. 

“This, the recall from the pod you travelled in. I took it out. Without this, you can’t get home. Yeah, see? Now you’re worried. If I fall, this falls with me. Then you’re stuck” The Doctor said, holding the recall over the edge. 

“What do you do with them, your human trophies?” The Doctor asked. 

“They’re held in stasis in our trophy chambers, on the cusp between life and death” Tim Shaw replied, as if it was no big deal. 

“Left to rot? How completely obscene” The Doctor replied. 

“They’re not important”

”Hey, I’m important” Karl said, as the Doctor ignored that one. 

“If I don’t stop you, your people will keep doing this” 

“Give me the circuit. Or…I detonate the bombs placed in your friends” Tim Shaw said, as Alexandria silently watched, not knowing how to help in this sort of situation. 

“More weapons. Did your pet put one in Karl too?”

”There was no need, he was tagged. He is the trophy” Tim Shaw replied. 

“I thought as much. Right, you detonate the bombs, I’ll destroy the recall. So what are we going to do?” The Doctor asked as Tim Shaw grumbled in anger.

“Poor Tim Shaw, the wannabe leader who has to cheat because he knows he’s unworthy. See, that’s why I know you won’t detonate. Although, you could prove me wrong. Because, we’re all capable of the most incredible change. We can evolve while still staying true to who we are. We can honour who we’ve been and choose who we want to be next. Now’s your chance, how about it?” The Doctor asked, as Tim Shaw had only one question as he stared at her. 

“Who are you?” At this question, Alexandria watched closely, a small grin forming on her face. 

“Oh, yes, I’m glad you asked that again. Bit of adrenaline, a dash of outrage, and a hint of panic knitted my brain back together. I know exactly who I am…”

”I’m the Doctor” 

“Sorting out fair play throughout the universe. Now, please, get off this planet while you still have a choice” The Doctor said as the man scoffed. 

“I choose to win” He said, as he activated the DNA bombs. 

Only, instead of killing them, it caused him to groan in pain. 

“Sorry, I removed those nasty little things from my friends. Swiss army sonic” The Doctor said, pulling out her sonic screwdriver. 

“Now with added Sheffield steel. And I implanted them back in your creature. Transference wasn’t just data, it was physical. You got everything transferred to you including five tiny bombs. You had a choice. You did this to yourself. Go home” The Doctor added with a grin, as she tossed the recall to the screaming alien, before Karl kicked him over the edge a moment later. 

“I am important!” Karl screamed down to where Tim Shaw had teleported away from, as the Doctor looked over to him. 

“You had no right to do that” The Doctor said. 

Looking to the left, their eyes widened as they noticed electricity hit Grace who was killing the creature, throwing her back from a high ledge, as they both began to climb down from the crane as fast as possible. 

Minutes later they reached the body of Grace, as Ryan and Graham sobbed over her corpse, The Doctor breathing in deeply as she stepped back slightly, biting her lip. 

“Not again” The Doctor whispered to herself, as Alexandria looked alarmed at this. 

‘This…this wasn’t in the show’ Alexandria thought, noticing the way the Doctor was fighting back tears. 

‘…It’s different in real life. This isn’t a show…and the Doctor is more real here…more emotional’ Alexandria thought with soft eyes as the Doctor ran off to be alone. 

At the same time, a notification appeared in her vision. 

[The First]

[Details - Complete the “First Episode” and come to the realization that this is real life, not a show. And the Doctor is still a person, one with emotions, and trauma]

Glancing at the rewards before over to where the Doctor had gone, she briskly walked and found the Doctor sitting as she looked down holding her knees together. 

Alexandria moved forward, and wrapped her arms around the woman who was broken from many loses, and even though Grace was a new face, she was a friend. And it would seem that even the Doctor didn’t take the loss well. 

“It’s alright Doctor” Alexandria whispered, as the woman didn’t sob, didn’t cry, but simply leaned into the hug, as Alexandria looked down at the woman, one thought on her mind as she did so. 

‘….I’m sorry’

That’s the end of the chapter!

So yeah, things will be different. The Doctor in her 13th iteration is rather notorious for being less…well, emotional than she was in her previous iterations. And I’d like to think that this was a bit more…real. The Doctor has lost…a LOT, and she just lost a new friend she met only a little while ago. 

She will show more emotions, have more reactions, and be more traumatized, like she was in her previous iterations. Alexandria will be her shoulder to cry on, and the one to always be there for her. 

After all, even a Doctor needs their own healer.
