Takeshi's Challenge Review - NES/Famicom: The Whole (Weird) Story - Kim Justice

Time for a quite strange review...Takeshi's Challenge for the Famicom. A game designed by someone who doesn't like video games who also happens to be Takeshi Kitano, comedian, actor, painter, and filmmaker extraordinaire. The result is, just as it says, a challenge. And one hell of a trip. Let's look into just how on earth such a game came about! Enjoy!

Almost certainly yes. Everything about it is purposely designed to infuriate the player...I mean, I managed to get as much as I could thanks to walkthroughs. Imagine playing it then...there are virtually no clues for a lot of the things you absolutely have to do in order to win - how on earth would you figure out that you needed to learn how to play the Shamisen (this comes into play after the hang-gliding - you have to play the Shamisen in order to convince a native not to boil you in oil), or how to hang-glide? (Especially when the game gives you several similar choices). There's several places in the game where you can actually buy a treasure map too, but they're all useless - the only treasure map that'll help you is the one you get from the old man (and of course, not punching him results in perhaps the single cruellest delayed game over in the history of video games). It's the most illogical game of them all, and yet logical when you consider that the whole game's designed as a troll job, because Takeshi Kitano hates games. I think someone should try and convince him to make a sequel.

Was it actually meant to be a terrible game? Was that part of the design?
