Hell on Earth - Episode 9: REBELLION

Comments

listening again because it's so fun and have to be an annoying pedant about everything i do: the litigation about henry and catherine's divorce was not about whether henry and catherine fucked, it was about whether arthur and catherine fucked. so it was a bunch of Henry 7's old friends showing up and saying "yeah i remember their wedding, arthur came out of the tent saying 'i love having sex with my spanish wife', it was awesome". whole thing was a total shambles.

Exhausted from whoring all day Thanks for the respite

more like the King Lames Bible, amirite? Or sorry: "Ammeth I righteth?"

The Children of Jack Acid

I am here late af absolutely triggered to SEETHE about the "England having another king Arthur" line.... Arthur was a Welsh mythological leader who fought the filthy saxon, becoming associated with England via the perverse French and later English cultural theft. Hence why the only historical royal Arthur was a Tudor heir, Henry VII seemingly trying to tie his first born into Welsh history and prophecy, emphasising their Welsh heritage by making sure he spoke Welsh etc. Obviously, he left his spare to do whatever the fuck in London and thus he didn't give two shits about Wales and we get the acts of union under Henry VIII which subsumed Wales into England after 200 years of military occupation, corroding the culture and depriving the language of official status etc. Historical irony and so on. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to jerk myself off with a leek.

I will never get over Dun-FERM-LINE 😭 but lads you've outdone yourselfs. This is the series I've always wanted - outstanding job 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Alexander Lawrie

I don't care what it is, I just want more

Fiddypea

Cromwell might have offed Charles 1st and all that but his name is still mud in Ireland for good reason!

David Cox

Fucking beautiful

Joseph Murphy

Honestly if Matt and Chris wanted to turn this into a Blowback-style medieval annual series, I'd be down for that

Mark Shatraw

Chris if you’re reading this please make and release a soundtrack for this series. The music is awesome.

Daniel Terry

This entire series is so incredibly done. Season 0 of revolutions. Every episode is an instant must listen. End of this one had me saying out loud "oh fuck".

Geoffrey Holland

smoking on that archbishop laud pack

Andrew Cross

Are you complaining about extra slop? Also this podcast is covering how the Thirty Years War influenced the birth of modern capitalism. Which would include England.

Jose Jaimes-Ramos

Matt and Chris my boys, you over come me with joy!

Jonathan Szerszen

Wait... what does all of this history in England have to do with the Thirty Years War?

Norman X. Picklestein

Great episode!!! I was hoping we’d get a deep dive on the English civil war and Cromwell.

Christian Petee

I will destroy you

Andrew Irwin

Great ep this week. I'm not normally a fan of the Tudor and Stuart eras, but this was pretty interesting.

Saga

I finally became a patron to Chapo so I could get access to this series. Matt Christman's materialistic analysis of history is wonderful and hearing Chris Wade and Christman together is the best duo in Chapo. I really hope these two do more work together.

Major bit me

Just imagine if he’d immigrated to connecticut sullivan and cromwell could been a cute general store

Kamran Husain

Can highly recommend the historical fiction “An Instance of the Fingerpost” for an interesting take on this period of English history.

England is now an outdated concept. It’s time to return to its natural form in the kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia, Wessex, etc

Tim Mullen

Just adding on, The KJV borrows pretty heavily from a then-illegal translation by William Tyndale who was burned at the stake less than 100 years before its publication. There are more accurate translations available, but KJV/Tyndale are the most poetic and are the origins of phrases like “give up the ghost,” “fly in the ointment,” “fought the good fight,” “bite the dust,” and a whole bunch of other phrases still in common use

I meant to put this comment on the antifada's new pod

M.R. Alchemist

Quantum in "quantum leap" refers to a discrete jump from one thing to another; a 'quantum' of something is lowest physically permissible amount of that thing.

M.R. Alchemist

I see Chris opted for the german pronunciation of "Dunfermline" lmao

Steeeeve

The English civil war bursting onto the scene like fortinbras in Hamlet.

Christopher Price

Great episode. Starting to get sad there’s only one of these left; no doubt it’ll be a banger

Abernathy

No English king can be named Arthur, when Arthur returns to Cymry he'll drive the anglos from the ancient island, no way they could name they're guy after him

Tristan

Went down to where Charlie 1st got his head cut off after listening to last episode to try and get some vibes

BJGreasly

As someone who had always loved the word “popery,” this episode was top-notch. Also, for the real nerds: https://is.gd/7rTWuH

Seconded

Luke Cragg

I once tried to smoke some popery when I was in high school. Didn't get high.

Dunfermline, Chris. Dum-FERM-lin. Sending love from Scotland boys 🙃

Ian Priest

Will the soundtrack become available at some point? There are quite a few bangers.

Dirtmouth

Of course fans of the source material are always going to have their preference on which director's vision is better but I'm glad we get to see a diversity of approaches in the History fandom

Gubriel

Hell On Earth and Mike Duncan's Revolutions Podcast now exist in the same cinematic universe

Gubriel

So the Gideons generally distribute the KJV, though in true equivocating episcopal fashion they've recently started to switch to the MEV (Modern English Version), a split-the-baby compromise between the beautiful prose of the KJV and the ham-fisted simplicity of the NIV (New International Version) often favored by evangelicals.

Ian H

Stellar episode! Probably my fav so far. And Matt, your closing was brilliant, I loved it. Thank you guys

James Cook

Declan McNamara

sad for no mention of Tommy Cromwell as the actual agent behind the dissolution of the monasteries, just bc I love the guy so much and think he should get more credit for English early state building. Otherwise, perfect episode of a perfect series.
