MM28 - Shriekquels feat. Andrew Hudson

Movie Mindset brings you a bone-chilling double billing based on the scariest concept in all of cinema: The Sequel!

That’s right, returning ghost Andrew Hudson of E1 & Pop That Corn joins Thrill and Hexe for a Movie Mindset first: an episode centered around the Shriekquels of two boovies we’ve covered before:

Drawing (bright red) first blood is the zombie movie of all zombie movies: 1978’s Dawn of the Dead! George Romero’s colorful follow-up to the Ur-Zombie flick Night of the Living Dead, with twice the social critique and much more than thrice the headshots.

And the final girl? 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the movie that answers the question “how do you make a worthy sequel to the greatest movie ever made?” With a joke so cutting it could clear a forest and a mic drop that hits harder than its Torch Song needledrop.

What do these movies have to say about America? How could they possibly hold up to the classics they follow?? Did the casts play pranks on each other on the set??? Listen to find out! If you dare…. Mwahahahaha

Come see Andrew & Will live at our 11/4 Election Eve show in LA with E1: https://link.dice.fm/b1eb3de54f54

Will's Drayton voice is so good lol

Special Adeline

Does it just go silent at 2:06:24

Steven

Yeah Andrew it's really "awful" to rewatch one of the greatest movies ever made. How soft is this guy?

godruler

I was just about to comment on that after hearing Hessa list their names. Knowing McFarlane, that can’t be a coincidence

Mike Chang

I believe the funny ‘clown song! from Dawn also was the theme of a 70’s game show. Maybe ‘The Dating Game’ even (or one of those) which given the context of the film makes it even funnier. Also yes, goddamn, they die love a good pie fight in the 70s - sadly finally kind of went out of style in the 80s.

Eric K

I made sure to catch TCM2 before listening, and very glad I did. Just want to say, kudos on the edit Hesse. I really enjoyed hearing more clip drops from the films being discussed! Podcasts really need to be way less afraid of doing that.

Rohmer Simpson

Would love to see a ghoulie screamset episode on Argentinian director Demián Rugna and his movies “Terrified” and “When Evil Lurks” both of them are fantastic “When Evil Lurks” is the only COVID movie that will ever accurately depict what 2020-2021 actually felt like and it doesn’t even reference COVID here’s to hoping for 2025 :)

Elai Kehler

You should be more mad about the fact that I very intentionally never mentioned that in the BTS Kit Carson says Stretch is Lefty’s illegitimate daughter lol

Hesse Deni

Keaton said he based Beetlejuice on Bill Moseley's performance.

Kenny Hedges

1978 was the goat year for horror movies: Halloween, Dawn of the dead, and invasion of the body snatchers.

lake

I hope you guys know "Hexe" is german for "witch"

jack flowers

Lords of the New Church, Concrete Blonde. Love em.

Dark Alliance

I dunno if anyone had mentioned it and maybe it’s just a coincidence but the main American Dad sitcom cast characters are, Roger, Steve and Francine. Is there a Stan in this movie? Need to rewatch and IMBD is vague. It’s probably just my personal bipolar mental breakdown but….

Paddy McFukface

Uh huh yeah girl for sure…pfp source?

Harper Big Spender Karabees

52:30 Shut the fuck up Will. You act like you’ve never even read even read “value, price, and profit”. And if your first impulse is to make fun of me for saying this, put down the fucking podcast and pick up a book. Or touch grass.

T4Tina

Ew, horns down

bryan allen

Bill Moseley formed a band in character as Chop Top along with Buckethead called Cornbugs. They put out multiple albums and they fucking rule.

Fr0id

I'm so disapointed Hesse did't keep her promise to spin every movie into a gay metaphor

Bety F

Dawn of the Dead is the best JG Ballard film.

Yarblockos

Periodt.

Gabe P

The clown music is so fitting for Mr. Plinkett’s theme, absurdly undermining everything.

Scott Grabel

Hell yeah Freaked rules! Killer soundtrack

dablatney

I think the big clock was still there too but I heard something happened to it recently

Dustin Nelson

Well that comes AFTER Dawn so....

Dustin Nelson

Apparently in the original script its "Slaughter" not Sawyer, which explains some stuff in the TCM game since their license is just for the first film and its unused materials/characters

Dustin Nelson

A little bit here and there but not a whole segment

Dustin Nelson

That is franklin though

Dustin Nelson

Having a huge amount of BTS knowledge on both TCMs it does bug me hearing "Pa Sawyer" because it's been confirmed multiple times by the writers and Hooper that the cook/Drayton is an older brother and not their dad

Dustin Nelson

the gag where dennis hopper finds a skeleton in the wheelchair and starts talking to it like its his nephew and then it cuts to stretch and there's a completely different skeleton in a wheelchair next to her

waterbird

this is a quick reminder that the Red River Showdown (texas v oklahoma) is this weekend and I'll just quote Will here -- "hook 'em horns"

Byron Lagrone

The numbers of “like” per minute are incredible - Olympic level

Wu Ming

Ok, ok, the - whoever can say “like” the most contest is funny. It goes from infuriating to funny pretty quickly. Well done…

Wu Ming

Two classics

Andrew Nicholas Bianchi

There's a test photo of the francine decapitation dummy.

Ian Woods

Right, another thing: in "the half has never been told", it's alleged that "zombie" was a term first coined by caribbean slaves describing the slaves who had been worn down and emaciated by the working conditions. Old-timers, relatively speaking, who were barely alive and just going through the motions. So, another race thing to ruminate on.

Doug Cartel

Did I Mandela Effect a memory of TCM2 being covered in a past season? Maybe it was touched on during the TCM1 episode?

Boaz Corey

Crazy that TCM 2 is the same year as Blue Velvet, Hoosiers, and one of my all time fav movies River's Edge. Hopper was Hoppin'

Ben_Grimm_13

Now that I looked it up when was”OC Stuggs” —Altman apparently made it a few years earlier and the theaters run was after 1986. The 85 date is just when it was copyrighted

Hardcore Virgin

OC Stiggs was 1985. 86 Hopper was in Blue Velvet. Rivers Edge Hoosiers and TCM2.

Hardcore Virgin

I now need Hesse to break into every episode with a correction or elaboration. Gold.

Brent

This was so good!

Dongo

we do need to start tracking this

Shivvy

how far into this ep b4 Hesse drops the obligatory “PERIODT?”

Hot Rod

Hesse killed with this edit, seriously above & beyond 🫡

Chris Wade

Also Francine smokes so many cigs while pregs and will definitely have a march of dimes baby

Hardcore Virgin

“It is something from something”—she’s really bringing her a game here.

Hardcore Virgin

I would think Evil Dead II would be the perfect example of a great horror sequel alongside Dawn, but I've never seen TCM2 so what do I know

Gordon Schmidt

I only realized just now why their last name is Sawyer.

T

I appreciate the accountability

Ian

I realized that while editing the ep and felt stupid for not noticing it before lmao. 26 uncredited library tracks!!

Hesse Deni

Can't be the only one sitting there thinking "how long before they compare eyepatch guy to Matt"

Flesh Colored Subaru

This was seriously great

Jay Bee Jay

Hesse instantly popping in to correct her misstatement with that soft music in the background... feels like a luxury that I don't get on other podcasts 💅

Tim O'

Aw yeah love me some TCM2

Jake

Love the MM pods and appreciate that recounting the plot of the movies during an open discussion must be tricky.. but the use of "like" is out of control this episode. Sorry to be that guy! Maybe it's just me

JLV90

I’m really mad that Hesse was incorrect!!

No1BASICCHANNELFAN

Hesse edited episode

Tvvvv

Romero is such an awesome grump. I love him.

Cody S

should’ve done Day of the Dead ffs but still, this was a nice surprise

Ennui

That was delightful to read

James Wallace

maybe it's my personal obsessions, but between the location, the small-business fascism, and the horrific human meat, I've always heard "I love Dallas because Dallas loves prime meats!" as a JFK rattle

Michael S. Judge

The pump is also labeled Avgas 80. I'm not a helicopter pilot but I'm pretty sure that's not what you put in a helicopter.

Peevish Giraffe

I’m a zombie movie fan and a helicopter pilot. When they refuel the helicopter they stick the nozzle in the step you’d use to climb up to the top of the helicopter, not the fuel port which is on the other side.

——

Shop til we DROP

Shivvy

lol, NAT 20

Toshio42

The helicopter decapitation that Hesse talks about wasn’t filmed, but they used Francine’s head prop in beginning swat raid. That was the head blown up by racist mario

Aedan

NEVER TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY!

Zack Burke

Hesse, you dummy! You goddamn dummy! Nah, you’re alright. 👍

Tim

I lost my shit when Chop Top delivered that line. I always assumed it was Les who said it in Jerry was a Race Car Driver.

DrFunkPhD

"My aching banana"

Eric Murphy

On the Dawn of the Dead soundtrack. A lot of the music (the muzak, goofy clown tunes and the weird triumph music at the end) is library music. Romero loved using library music. IIRC, the Euro cut has more Goblin in it.

Jim Veil

haxan, thank you for your explanation about the death of protagonists before night o the living dead. my perception is that movie mindset only comes from a place of love so i wd be surprised if any commenters say anything. the rest of this meaningless comment will express......ghoulive 5evah!

wailing ken jennings

Romero originally tried to get Dawn made in 1973/1974, after his career was stalled and he was deep in debt post-Crazies. In his first draft the zombies were intelligent and had more or less taken over the operations of 70s capitalism, including a kind of regional distribution system sending butchered human meat out into the world in trucks. He tried to get it made at AIP, which was interested if Romero made it an all-Black cast and cast a sports star in the lead. AIP was probably thinking of Jim Brown, but Romero's first impulse was to get the dude he'd just made a TV documentary about. So I like to think that somewhere in the multiverse there's a low budget, quick and dirty version of Dawn that came out in 1974, starring OJ Simpson.

Adam

"First as tragedy" - 2 soyjacks at the mall "Then as farce" - 2 zombie soyjacks at the mall Ignore me I'm posting dumb shit

Doug Cartel

Gotta say, Romero made a great call making 'Dawn of the Dead' about Americans killing off vast hordes of natives to clear a space for treats.

Plainwrap

Range 15 comes up in this

Chapo Trap House

Would be amusing to see someone compare/contrast romeros' critiques of americas violence culture via zombie movies with that dogshit zombie film Range 15 or whatever chapo reviewed years ago

Doug Cartel

Can’t wait to hear it. Deadmalls did a video from Monroeville Mall and found all the fake plastic plants are the same as the ones in the Dawn of the Dead, with 40 years of dust on them.

Billiam

Many guys with a big sticker that say "zombie response squad" over a biohazard symbol on the back of their lifted jeep with roof floodlights are turning off DOTD halfway through because it's too woke

GG Allin Dulles

Forreal the bridge scene in TCM2 with "No One Lives Forever" blasting over it was more exciting, like i5 was every weird, silly and grim thing I enjoy in media all at once and left me wanting to see every 80s movie I'd never heard of before. TCM2 made me realize I've always loved this stuff and to stop letting the crap baggage from my religious upbringing stop me from accepting it. It was like how people describe taking stuff like DMT

Dustin Nelson

Music is my life ✌️

MCL

Dog will hunt!

Ben Walsh

Let's all go to the mall

Christian Johnson

*Loud Oingo Boingo music plays triumphantly*

Dustin Nelson

I got really drunk last weekend and watched TCM 2 and it was probably my favorite movie experience

Invarios

I’m so scared rn

Meatwad Cosby
