But Muzan has twisted the desires left from their backstories to suit his needs, so we still get a peek into them during the battle. For example, Daki/ Ume hates ugliness/ likes being a Demon because "Demons never grow old. And they don't need money to eat. They don't get sick. They don't die. They have nothing to lose. " When she says this, the anime shows brief glimpses of her burned body as well as when her and her brother found shelter in the snow, which we don't fully see until we see their backstory in this episode. As another example, if you recall the hand Demon from season 1 (the Demon that Tanjiro fought during Final Selection), his backstory/ regret was that he couldn't hold his brother's hand anymore. As a Demon, his powers were centered around his hands reaching out and taking hold of whatever they could. The spider Demon, the Lower Five Demon named Rui, had powers centered around webs or, rather, threads, if you will. When he became a Demon, he (in his mind, anyway) snapped one of the most important threads: the bond between him and his beloved parents. He subconsciously (because, again, he doesn't remember his human life) tries to fill this void by making his own "pretend family". He (and we) finds out as he's dying that, in reality, his parents still loved no matter what he had done, and that they would go with him wherever he was going. So, while no Demon we've seen to date truly remembers their humanity, those memories and desires, having been twisted by Muzan, still guide their choices and wants every day.
