Excellent summary and 100% agree that this is Canute’s main perspective.

It's more so that from his perspective, god does not give paradise to everyone. A lot of the Vikings that Canute spent time with were incredibly hopeless. They could not comprehend the meaning of love and they were constanlty getting killed in these pointless battles. Canute could not understand why god would create such beings only for them to be doomed in the afterlife because of their pagan ways. What's the point of giving them free will when they choose to do evil? This is why canute rejects god, he realizes these vikings will never find peace, so he is trying to concentrate their power instead, so he can one day create a heaven on earth for everyone. The bloodshed happening now is simply a means to an end. He cannot change the Vikings and their culture overnight. He ultimatley needs wealth and power to influence them, hence his war on Ketil's farm. Canute is not evil and he isn't even really an atheist pesae. He just belives that god's ways are not working. It's obviously a dangerous mindset, but it does come from a place of reason. Also, Thorfin wants to make a paradise on earth too, just like canute however he refuses ot use violent means.
