I came to books because of the first Denis Dune and although I like many designs in Lynch Dune as well it was hard at first not to think interiors in those brutalist Jordanian monolithic blocks. Arabic motives are obviously always welcome BUT.
Frank Herbert books is full of plastic. There is of course plasteel but just plastic is in abundance. Sometimes it is even in the architecture.
I was talking with WizardsOnly about possible references for the Worm's crypt and he (hey, man!) proposed a raw stone cave as the opposite of brutalism.
But for the Hwi and Leto scene there needed to be some sci-fi or very modern element in the background to balance out what can otherwise look as fantasy.
This is how I came to those canyon super colorful rocks shielded by a water-bottle like plastic inner dome. I am not sure why but I got super obsessed with this idea and wanted it to look hand painted as well.
Here it is! This is gonna be a repeating design theme.
When I was in China with my camera I always looked for either old buildings or those new traditional villages built to look old and comparing what I see to big movie sets I would get disappointed that stuff like plastic is almost unavoidable in the shot. Same goes for spending time back home at the cabin, there is so much old living spirit but we have so much sticking out plastic elements in everything. And slowly I started to like the idea of that in terms of aesthetics...
