The previous summer was Steve Carrell’s breakout movie in 40 Year Old Virgin, so the show got a lot more people tuning in just to see him. Dundies was originally not slated to be the season premier but they decided to make it episode 1 because it really highlights Michael and all of the good and bad traits he has.

The first season they were kind of testing the waters and then after that they really find their way and the budget goes up. It just gets better as they develope the story lines and everyone falls into their characters.
