i got into your channel, Daniel's channel, general malazatube, Brandon Sanderson's channel, so i could get a better sense for what Fantasy can do for a reader trying to jump into a world that is different from our own. the closest i've come during this - dating way back to the early aughts, when i first began my initial search with the need to find what makes these things so wonderful... is Magical Realism. (i haven't given up on fantasy!) and that's only because i LIKE the disconcerting blend between the real world and the bizarre, magical things (which can happen on a continuum, a sliding scale between EVERYTHING IS BIZARRE IN THIS COUNTRY, to like, "hey that horse can talk, cool"). i mean it makes for a more interesting read, to my mind, than most realist books. ESPECIALLY the kind of, uber-ironic, super-heroic, every-men types of characters in "realist" literature particularly in the early-mid aughts. (Chabon, Franzen, David Foster Wallace, and other boring jerks like them). that stuff is for people who specifically turn their noses up at Fantasy, or even Magical Realism. incidentally, the ones who write the good stuff, the Realism that actually reads like an interesting story, see nothing wrong with Magical Realism, OR Fantasy.
