Toxic Fandoms

90% of the time I step back whenever conversations get heated. Sometimes I cant help it and be irrational and still succumb to trolling or bad faith arguments or just want to argue . But I learned over the years , random strangers on internet usually dont deserve my time and effort to refute and get into overly long debates. This is completely different if I am talking to my actual long time friends , then we can troll each other or get stupid over some irrelevant detail. Because at the end of the day I have relationships with these people outside of media discussions . As far as fandoms go. This might be controversial. But I value opinion of people who are super into specific piece of media or medium and nothing else far less. I much more likely to hear and be open with people who dabble in everything and has more relaxed , well rounded approach . Especially people who get into mediums or series completely fresh , usually i find far more value in conversing with these people. Honestly its why I started watching your content , because you were new to manga as a medium and its always interesting to see people experiencing something for the first time . Fandoms by nature are hyped focused on one thing or piece of media exclusively and are very technical and anal about it , and thats just not my personal wheelhouse . A lot of people like that approach , its just not for me . Toxic fandoms , i dont really have time for those people , i straight up end conversation in first 5 minutes, because you can see the implications a mile away . Its literally the opposite of why I enjoy media /fiction . Also its smart move of you not mentioning any particular series when talking about the negative aspects of fandoms . Cause it would just give ammunition to these people . Despite me feeling like you have very particular fandoms in mind when talking about it , lol

Another thing that can ruin a fandom is, for example with comic books, the know-nothing know-it-alls. I started reading comics as a kid, and followed Marvel and DC for a long time until they started changing for various reasons. Part of that is due to to the movies and them becoming popular. So spaces that used to be exclusive to people who were knowledgeable about the history of comics and had a love for the medium started having people who knew nothing about comics outside of the movies and Wikipedia jumping into these spaces like they were experts on the subject, and it ruined many former spaces I used to follow as a result. People who had nothing to do with comics before came in to complain about them because they didn't like something or were offended by them and even though they didn't personally contribute to the industry by buying comics wanted them changed. As a matter of fact, a general rule I've found is that very often once something becomes popular with the masses, there is a very large chance that the fandom will be much worse off.
