Like in all series and movies there need to be changes made in order to "entertain" in a different way than a documentary does. This is, in my opinion, a very good way to make the viewer aware and hopefully/possibly increase the interest and learn more about the actual events that took place. In any way these series made me read about the disaster so I could educate myself. I was 17 when the disaster happened and here in the west, we basically did not know what the cause was, not what the effects would be, nothing at all really. A few years later while I was in college the Sovjet Union and the Eastern Block collapsed. I think that the Chernobyl disaster definitely had an influence on the collapse, I do not believe however it was the prime cause of it. The collapse had already started in the 70s because the Sovjet Union simply could not keep up in the arms race with the west, which resulted in a slow economical crisis with no end to which eventually people stood up to, for instance, in Poland, Hungary, Romania and also the Sovjet Union itself eventually.
