How Overcooked’s Kitchens Force You to Communicate | Game Maker's Toolkit

Hello! This is like a blast from the past - a shorter video on an indie game! I just really wanted to talk about Overcooked, which I have been obsessed with over the summer, and how it's one of the best co-op games around.

Thanks for your support. Lots more stuff coming soooooon.

I really liked Overcooked, I played it with my boyfriend during the summer, and he often would say « this is it I quit » before picking up the controller to continue. It was really fun and pretty difficult, and it indeed forced us to communicate; often our failures were due as much to not grasping how the level worked as to not communicating enough. I had at first attempted to do it solo, but it was too difficult and not that enjoyable. The only issue we had was actually with Overcooked 2, which was suddenly much easier, which was at first refreshing, but made it a bit boring at times, even though some ideas were great.

Definitely looks promising :)

Sorry for the duplicates - I got caught in Patreon's spam filters, I guess and they decided to restore *all* the comments I made =/

I'm impressed with your graphics describing gameplay and level design. Pretty slick!

Thanks for the great video on Overcooked, Mark! My wife and I play a lot of co-op games together, and Overcooked is probably our favorite for the very reason you point out in the video - if you try to go it alone, you'll fail! Communication is so important - I often tell couples to play Overcooked together to gauge their compatibility =)

Glad you made this, currently building an asymmetrical VR game, some of the key notes might help me fine tune my game (Currently having issues where roles sit around and do nothing.) Thanks for the video!

A future topic that I feel would be really informative and cool would be one on how a game like Towerfall is thoughtfully designed from the beginning to enable players of different skill levels to have fun competing with each other. Matt Thorson has some talks on his process to designing the game that I am sure you would enjoy if you haven't seen them already: https://youtu.be/3VHKZ3MYhLk

I think one of the best bits about Overcooked which you touched on is that EVERYTHING has a different tempo. Chopping is much quicker than frying which is slower than mixing, ect, ect. That makes it really hard to perfectly sync up with the other players in ways that only become more pronounced as the round goes on in much the same way as dishwashing. Overcooked is amazing, glad to see it on the channel, Mark!

I got a stupid grin on my face when I saw this. Can't remember how I stumbled onto Overcooked but I picked it up for the Switch and convinced my mom to play it with us kids. Now we play once a week as a family and it's great fun. I think Overcooked's quiet strength is its accessibility and relatability, and I hope Ghost Town Games keeps up the great work.
