The Secret to Designing Mysterious Games

What makes a game feel mysterious? And how do we make a player feel like an active participant in solving the mystery? Let's dig in to some amazing games to find out.

Thanks for supporting this one, Patrons. You can watch it on YouTube or Nebula, or read it on Substack.

If you're a paid-up member of the Patreon you can also watch a bonus companion video where I pore over old instruction booklets in a slightly weird ASMR-style experience.

I'm glad to have this one finally finished - now I can focus entirely on Mind Over Magnet ahead of its launch day in November! Speak soon.

SokPop just released an amazing mystery game. It's essentially an adventure game but with "chores" and a "time loop" (as in Outer Wilds) which still give you something interesting to do even when you feel stuck. It's surprising and fresh. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2720950/Grunn/

Mystery is the main thing I like about Genshin Impact and Honkai Star rail. In a way since the games are adding new areas and story every month, there is a ton of time to build mystery for both story and areas.
