Controllers Control Everything | Game Maker's Toolkit

Ah, the video game controller. That bulky chunk of plastic - bristling with buttons and sticks and bumpers - allows us to interface with alien worlds, fantasy landscapes, and post-apocalyptic wastelands. But is the design of the traditional console controller limiting the sorts of experiences designers can offer?

Games like Heavy Rain or Until Dawn take an approach that's a bit between a couple of the ones you mention - while they allow for semi-arbitrary interactions, they don't (generally) do so with a simple button press, but with a more complex gesture meant to simulate the actual motion.

Great video, Mark. I too found the controller of my PS3 very limiting with regard to what kinds of games I could play which is one of the reasons why I use my PC to play games now. That way I can use my PS3 controller, Wiimote and kb&m on the same system depending on the game.
