Prompt #13

You’ve feuded with the neighbors for generations, the original reason long lost to time.  That is, until you found your Great Aunt’s journal.

Blood must be spilled. I don't know how to explain it so I will simply copy the letter I sent to Emelia. I cannot believe it has come to this. I never knew hatred until this day...

Dear Emelia,

The jig is up.  I would understand if you, say, wanted to take Seth as a lover.  Seth is gorgeous and is, after all, only a man.  I would understand stealing our money - our hard earned money - and claiming it as your own.  I would understand so much, Emilia.  We are, after all, only human.  I could have offered grace or kindness or even turned the other cheek (I really wouldn’t blame you for Seth).  But you stole my meatball recipe and now it’s scorched earth, bitch I am going to fucking end your bloodline.

Oh yea, you read that right.  Your whole fucking family.  If a man ever even thought about putting a baby in your sorry ass I am going to end him too.  I am going to destroy the library records of your surname ever existing.  No one will be able to figure out who you were or where you came from.  This is the ultimate fuck-upping.  You will regret your birth.  People you admire will feel pain and you will have only yourself to blame.  We used to be friends, Emelia.  And now I will undo you and everything you love from this world.  I will raise my children to hate all that you are and we will not rest until justice has seen your entire existence razed into oblivion.

See you at church,

Rachel

Your brother comes upstairs dressed in army fatigues.  You hear screams outside.  Another day in this proxy war of feuding neighbors.  More lives will be lost today.  He asks you, “Are we justified in our spilled blood, oh war-sister?  Is our cause righteous?”

You throw down the book and close your eyes as a single tear rolls down your cheek.

“They took her greatest treasure war-brother… we will not rest until they are no more”

You pick up your weapon with newfound conviction.  It’s always better to know why you fight.

[I am surprised I got this done, tbh. Last week flew by. Too many sides to memorize. I think we'll see some reprieve anon]

I don’t have the spoons to participate this week, but just wanted to say brava to my fellow patrients for their brilliant responses! I am blown away each week by the creativity in the clinic. Thanks, doc, for giving us this outlet.

The house on the corner of Maple and Vine sat dusty and empty, had been for some time. Boxes now packed, the windows were shuttered and where family gathered insults were muttered. Shaking their fists to the neighbors next door Violet’s kin scowled, grunted ”no good sons of a whore”. Her cousins and nephews, her sister and son, His daughter and dear friends, Vauxhalls present save one. Her favorite niece who shared her name sensed the air of the house, felt the anger and shame. No joy to be found with those bastards just west, Enduring their presence, her aunt’s greatest test. One more sweep, up to the attic she stole to survey the space, each cranny and hole. Crouching down on the boards, reaching into the nook, Violet’s fingers searched, and came back with a book. A smooth covered volume, the size of her hand Her name was emblazoned in script swirling and grand. She thumbed through the pages filled with tight lines Ambient noise ceased, she sat frozen in time. Quips about meals, observations in verse She journaled her days, and there- the source of the curse. Decades and years of bitterness and strife Across the alley, their feud came to life. Violet wrote of a man, a handsome young son He caught her eye he might be the one. They’d courted all summer Her kiss she did save for the dapper young gent to him, her sweet heart she gave. The secret they’d kept, tucked close to their chest through sun drenched days and nights with no rest. The day they declared Their love and their plans Violet arrived breathless, She took his hand. Tonight was a gift, the fee he would use To pay for their wedding and a house with a view. For also that evening, a man came to dine dressed in a smart suit with a bottle of wine. There to entice the son, the family brain, he wanted the patent To the machine he laid claim. The patent man tinkered soldered and fussed but this contraption he wanted Own it, he must. He’d toiled for years, couldn’t get it quite right Then the son was inspired by his love’s face one night Through the window he’d spied her her cheeks all aglow What was she doing The lad just had to know. He scaled the brickwork Up the trellis he crawled To peep through her curtains Then his name she called Inspiration took hold Like the rays of the sun Other inventions had failed This was the one. All through the meal, Violet caught his gaze, He couldn’t wait to show her what would fund their days. After dinner was over, they gathered as one In the parlor together It should have been fun The man asked for a demo The boy proudly unveiled His machine he’d created He’d bled, sweat, and wailed. His voice did not waver, he exclaimed to them all What he was selling was the Violet Fucksall. A play on her name, an ode to her joy, the family was shocked Silence greeted the boy. Her face had gone pale, she never returned to the house next door, Her niece just then learned. The last entry was scribed, tear stains dotting the page, blotching the ink that had faded with age. “I advise if you read this, and you’re wanking at night, Please shut the curtains and turn out the light!! And if this advice comes after you do Make sure he splits The money with you. Live out your days But please make his worse Marry someone worthy After you've fattened your purse.

I'm loving how most fewds around here are caused by sex or food (or both), starting with the famous meatballs of course 💗. Beats boring disputes about rights of way, overhanging trees and loud music 😉

Love this, Delicada! I hope your protagonist fights for Winifred ♥️

This was great doc. Take anything but the meatball recipe! Here’s mine. I’m sorry it’s long again. 😄 Fun Fact: the electric vibrator was invented by Dr. Joseph Mortimer Granville. There was a myth it was used on hysterical and depressed women to orgasm. Dr. Granville argued this stating his machine was for muscle aches. The only sexual way it was used, was for men, vibrating on the perineums to treat impotence. 😊 In elegant handwriting and accompanied by detailed sketches, the journal reveals the truth about the generational feud. Your great aunt Winifred, a brilliant yet unrecognized inventor, had designed a vibrating machine to ease the chronic pain of her husband, Lloyd. He had spent years working himself into the ground, and the toll on his body was severe. Winifred’s invention was not only meant to alleviate his suffering but also to lift them out of financial hardship. After months of painstaking effort, she finally completed the machine. The results were miraculous—Lloyd, once crippled by pain, stood tall and moved with ease, even appearing more youthful. Their joy, however, was short-lived. The local doctor, a neighbor, noticed Lloyd’s remarkable transformation and asked about their secret. Trusting him, Winifred shared her invention. Soon after, the machine mysteriously vanished. Winifred confronted the doctor, suspecting his involvement, but he denied any wrongdoing. Devastated and unable to afford the materials to rebuild, she was left with nothing but her drawings and dwindling hope. Despite her best efforts to secure a loan, the local merchants and storekeepers scoffed at the idea of a woman requesting financial assistance. As Lloyd’s condition worsened, Winifred’s spirit was crushed, and she fell into a deep depression. Her despair led her to a clinic that specialized in treating women with hysteria and depression. To her horror, the treatment involved a machine—her machine, now used to induce ‘cures’ through forced orgasms. Confronting the doctor again, he maintained his innocence, but the damage was done. The betrayal fueled a deep animosity that would simmer between the two families for generations. This journal reveals the truth behind the feud, exposing your Great Aunt’s stolen invention and her failed attempts to reclaim her legacy. Now, the question looms: will you resolve this age-old conflict, or will you fight to restore Winifred’s rightful place in history?

Pretty much what happened in my family. You’ve feuded with the neighbors for generations, the original reason long lost to time. That is, until you found your Great Aunt’s journal. April 7, 1923 I’m bored. I think I’ll create a generations-long feud with those assholes across the road.

The Lady Is A Tramp

Dear Diary, Just heard from Lynette down at the Easy Mart that Suzie Smythe (yeah, the one that lives over the crick) is entering the Bloomington Blue Belle Blue River Bagpipe Unicycle contest. Everyone in an 8.56 mile radius knows I’m the champion. No one can match me. I got four summers of unicycle lessons from Dave over at the circus camp, a Flower of Scotland pipes tutorial on Betamax from the library, and I follow the pipes at every St Patrick’s’ Day parade. Does she know the amount of time I put in to training? 6:45-6:49pm everyday. Every. Damn. Day. Except Sunday, Tuesdays and Fridays when I drive Ma to get her hair done in town. No way Susie’s taking my spot! This kinda of hogwash is just cause she wants to beat me. But this can’t stand! She’s already the Pogo Penny Whistle Queen three of the last nine years. Why can’t she leave well enough alone? ‘Probably cause I kissed her man Zeke outside Gary’s Gallon Gas a couple months ago. But it was a Tuesday and he was cute. What’s a girl to do? I’ll be darn sure she doesn’t take my champion sash. ‘Cause I sure as hell am wearing it to Cousin Doris’ wedding. ‘Matches my dress. And I already bought a matching headband. Watch out Susie! You ain’t gonna win!

[I gotta go, so I'ma post now/read later; also, if no one understands this reference and forgives me for the fact that I only wrote about 1/3 of this I'm gonna be real sad] “Hon, I think I figured out why the neighbors hate us.” “Really? Why?” “I found Great Aunt Helen’s journal! I was checking it out because who doesn’t want to read a dead family member’s diary, right?” “…sure?” “Anyway, I found this entry: “Well. Today I had to tell Caroline on Facebook to keep my name out of her thin mouth. She stole my broccoli casserole recipe 8 years ago and claimed it was hers! And then Doris had the nerve to tell me that she “know [I’m] not talkin about my bfriend Carolin, no, she a chreitsn lady” which, spelling aside, is just not true. So I said to her “she’s a rotten recipe stealing bitch, Doris, careful who your friends are.” And then. And THEN! Caroline gets all up in my thread all “The only thing I’ve ever stolen is the heart of our lord,” can you believe her! So I told her, I said “you shoulda stole some anti aging cream you lizard bitch!” And then she just starts going on about the “damn neighbors around here,” so I did a little facebook sleuthing to see what I could find.” “Oh wow, you did the *deep dive*, huh?” “I did. And OH BOY, did that argument escalate! So we left off with the ‘lizard bitch’ comment, right, I’m just going to narrate their back and forth: Caroline- “ooh, and he [the lord, whose heart she stole] will forgive me for it. I’ll pray for you, you dumpster fire of a woman.” Helen- “OK you inbred bible thumping bitch. Go cry about that man don’t. Want you some more” [I’m not fully sure what that means exactly, Aunt Helen’s syntax is a little off there.] C- “She was too busy felating her daddy to go to school and now she’s taking it out on honest kind people. At least I can read the bible and know the lord in my heart.” H- “Honest and kind? Is that what you call each of your sagging tits [damn, Helen!].. did your man tell you about my fellatio skill? I’m sorry your jealous” [I need to talk to my mom about this, who knew Aunt Helen knew what fellatio is!] C- “no your daddy did. At least my titties are distinguishable from my stomach and my neck. I’ll pray for you. No wonder Rodney left.” [These old ladies aren’t fucking around!] H- “First start by making your neck distinguishable from a dish rack, I’ll pray for you too. That you learn to live without a man. And stop bein so bitter. Life goes on Caroline you musty bitch!” C- “You are a rude nasty woman. I hope you die alone” H- “alone and RICH bitch. Now kick. ROCKS.” Like, holy shit! That got BONKERS.” “Right? Like, how good was that recipe? So I take it Caroline was the neighbor’s great aunt?” “Turns out! I did try to go over and chat with them about it, but apparently they are still, in fact, holding a grudge against a dead woman for what she said about another dead woman.” “Well, the sins of the father, yada yada. Or in this case, the sins of the great aunt.” “Maybe I should take them a broccoli casserole.”

Margaret Peffy Margie Maggie

It’s the “see you at church” that took me out.

Carrie
