I will say this, Sedaris is an author you really need to listen to on audiobook rather than read. The cadence and his delivery are what make the stories so hilarious. It gets lost on pages. My favorite role I ever acted in was Sister Butterworth in David and Amy Sedaris’ Book of Liz. It’s quirky and funny and one of my favorite comedies.

My favorite tellers of fictional short stories have mostly been mentioned - Stephen King (pick any), George RR Martin (Tuff Voyaging was the before times and a fave), Bradbury ofc. Also a sci-fi nerd, so primarily that. But also non-fiction I will forever hold in my heart Maya Angelou. That woman knew. And she told it.

I was 17 or 18 when Steve Allen did a signing at my local store. Huge fan, and wrote my junior year term paper on his books but didn’t own any. (I checked them out from this huge building called a library, before the internet.) I brought my term paper for him to sign, and he told me he would be delighted to read it and asked to send him a copy. My mom (who drove me because I was a nerd without a license or car) was ecstatic for me and I said “oh god no, I’m not sending a copy of my paper to THE Steve Allen.” A couple decades later, I wish I did send it if only for the off chance he’d actually send me a letter back. It would be cool to have that now. But at the time the thought of him reading my dribble was horrifying 😂

2024-09-09 04:02:35 +0000 UTCThis is an amazing story! Me Talk Pretty One Day is my favorite Sedaris book, but I can also see why he’s not for everyone. I like the Miyazaki Rule! I feel like we all have things we don’t like that are loved by others. The character actor, Stephen Tobolowsky, is a fantastic story teller! I recommend his book The Dangerous Animals Club to everyone. His stories are both funny and moving. I recommend listening to the audio book for maximum enjoyment.

It hit me when I was biking home that night that I'd just wished Susan-fucking-Sarandon good luck with her "future endeavors." She'd mentioned she had something big coming up--I doubled down with "I'm sure it will be ok" [groan]. When I got home, I blabbed about this exchange to my parents, to which my dad responded that he'd gone on a couple dates with her when they were both in their early 20s. Does envy ever loosen her grip? [she called me "very sweet" though]
