Prompt 31 [22 is next]
Added 2025-05-11 22:28:37 +0000 UTCThey loved free libraries. This one, in particular, was their favorite. Today they found [amongst the usual Christian Self-Help books and cowboy-themed smut novels] an old Superman comic. It looked like it could be worth something. More interesting than the comic, however, was the hand-written note inside. It read:
Run
The weirdest part was the ink seemed wet, as if someone had just written it. In a moment of desperate imagination they thought, what if it's trying to tell me something and decided to jog home. They barely avoided the drunk driver. If they had been any slower, they would have been hit. The paper was blank.
Weeks passed. They racked their brain trying to recall which book this mysterious paper was born from but they could not remember. One day, they had a particularly nasty argument with their boss over some missing money in the company. They were told not to worry about it, buy they had a bad feeling. There was a sudden urge to check the paper again. It felt like grabbing for your phone just before it rings. The paper said
Quit
So they did. In two weeks, the company's embezzlement scandal was all over the news and no employee was spared suspicion. A living nightmare for anyone still in their position, but not for them. Not anymore. Thanks to the paper. The paper was, of course, now blank.
Months later, they met someone. Someone breathtaking and spontaneous. Someone kind and beautiful. Someone who talked to them a little too long and stared a little too hard. But they didn't know how to handle it. They were scared. What if they mess up what they have? What if all the advances were in their head? What if it was just someone being nice to them? They figured, what's the point? I'll probably screw it up anyway.
But tomorrow they will see the paper under the protective case on their nightstand. They will see it says
Try
And it will be up to them if they do

2025-05-11 23:12:26 +0000 UTCI don’t really know where I was going with this one, I started it a while back and couldn’t pick the thread of it back up. ——— She loved free libraries. This one, in particular, was her favorite. Today, she found—amongst the usual Christian self-help books and cowboy-themed smut novels—an old Superman comic. It looked like it could be worth something. More interesting than the comic, however, was the hand-written note inside. It read: **If you’ve found this, you’re either very lucky, very nosy, or very interesting. If it’s the first, congratulations. If it’s the second, I respect the hustle. If it’s the third, well… that’s a dangerous thing to be. You see, interesting people are the ones who notice the corners of things—the cracks in the world where the light gets in, and sometimes the dark. They ask questions they shouldn’t. They linger where the air tastes strange. They look twice at shadows that move when they shouldn’t. If you are, indeed, interesting, then a bit of advice: Don’t follow the music if you hear it at midnight. Don’t pick up coins in the gutter, no matter how they gleam. And if you find a cat with a torn ear and mismatched eyes, don’t pet it. (And if you’ve already petted the cat, I’m so sorry.) Lastly, if you ever find a door that wasn’t there before, and it feels like it’s looking back at you, don’t touch the handle. No matter how much it whispers your name. P.S. If you’re the person who left the Superman comic here last month, I owe you a drink. P.P.S. I know what you did with the dog-eared pages. For shame.**
