It’s protocol for ambulance drivers to stop at train tracks and wait. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it is best to talk. Waiting in silence just makes the whole thing last longer. “Well,” said Will. “I suppose this is as good a time as any to tell you that I’ve always loved you.
“Umm, what?” I said to the man I had never met.
“I know, I know you’ve always known. You wanted to spare my feelings and so you haven’t mentioned it. I just needed to say it. In case, you know, you die.”
“I’m gonna die?!”
“Well, you just never know. Yeah, your leg is broken but these things can take a turn and I know I would regret not saying anything.”
“...have we met before?”
“Wow…wow...after I’ve seen you naked. Been in the shower with you.”
“Cause I broke my leg in the shower and needed help to get out.”
“And who did you call when you needed help?”
“911?”
“Calling 911 is calling me. Listen Brian-”
“Bill.”
“What?”
“My name is Bill, actually.”
“...It’s like I don’t even know you. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything. This was a mistake. I thought after what we’d been through you might care for me the way I’ve cared for you. I mean, you said you need me.”
“I needed help out of the tub.”
“God, I feel so used. I should go.”
“To the hospital…right?”
“That’s what this has all been about, hasn’t it? The hospital. I keep falling for guys, just like you, who only want a ride to the hospital. Fine. Ok, let’s keep going to the hospital. They’ll be able to heal your broken leg...but not my broken heart.”
