I clear my throat, “how’s it going, anyway?”
She stands, wiping the back of her hand on her forehead and unintentionally spreading the oil from the engine. I smirk, choosing to say nothing; this was always a good look on her, a rugged, mechanic look that caused my insides to stir and warm and imagination to stretch.
“Everything is good, just this engine is kicking my ass.”
“Did you get the right one?” She tosses me a glare, and I mimic zipping my mouth closed.
“It’s just the first time I’ve done an engine like this. I’ll get it,” she growls, sounding like she was trying to reassure herself more than me. I watch her and bite my lip as I think about telling her about my thoughts. It probably wasn’t the best time, but when would that be? There would always be a ‘reasonable’ reason I couldn’t tell her, or why I kept them to myself. Perhaps she would never know how much she meant to me. How simply seeing her face made my heart lift, and I involuntarily smiled. How moments, just like this, caused everything to slow down and ground me, allow me to breathe. All because of her. But no, I’m sure she didn’t wish to hear that.
