I don’t know if anyone pointed this out already but Akainu (lava admiral) is the same guy who blew up the passenger ship trying to leave Ohara in Robin’s flashback killing all the civilians cause he didn’t want the information of the scholars leaking out in case one snuck on board the civilian ship. You see him briefly on the navy vessel in that episode but his eyes are covered and he is referred to as vice admiral Sakazuki (which is his real name). Akainu is just his moniker which translates to red dog. He is the worst of the three admirals.

Can he? I mean even if he has the ability to look that info up. Since someone as close to him as Iva didn't know Dragon had a son, I assume the others didn't know either. 1 he couldn't send people to check on Luffy as a kid or people would start asking questions. 2 Looking into the details of a small time pirate like Luffy would raise questions. I don't think Dragon could safely have people look into Luffy's situation without raising questions. To protect Luffy he could only know what the revolutionary's naturally brought to him, and I don't think they would try to learn if a random pirate [from their perspective] like Luffy had a brother. Even if they did there would be no reason to report the family lineage of every pirate in the world.

Sengoku is fighting blackbeard. I think Akainu was well past where Blackbeard was, he's over there with Marco and everyone else. He can only move forward. Plus Sengoku, the fleet admiral is taking care of that side. I think everyone has their own roles and targets in this war. As an admiral he need to be fighting the top dogs on the other side. His orders are not to protect the marines, but to pursue the pirates. But if the whole arc was about pirates invading or attacking Marineford (not saving Ace) then yes, Akainu's priority should be protecting Marineford and making sure the loss of soldiers are minimized.

Yep, jason even said SOME pirates are bad, but in all honesty, MOST pirates are bad. Its definitely about perspectives. Its like whenever Luffy is involved, we end up overlooking a lot of things. (Impel Down as an example) But i gotta say when it comes to being good or evil. Or heroes (sorry Luffy) and villains, Luffy is the good and BlackBeard is literal evil and a villain. No questiones asked. But definitely, everything is gray in OP and that just shows how these characters are very well written.

Oda has perfectly made it that this world isn't black and white, there are 'good and bad' on both sides. Most marines are just trying to protect the innocent, but some take it way too far with their 'justice'. Our opinion on pirates is a bit skewed because we follow Luffy, but most pirates are not as friendly and warm as the Strawhat Crew.

This arch is one of the most memorable one for me. When I finished the arc, I went on a hiatus of watching OP for 4 years cause his death hit too close to home as an eldest child with existential crisis 🤡. Now that i’m older, I love that Oda in way made Ace’s dream came true before his death. He, who always questioned his existence and strived to be the free at all times, saw how much his presence in the world was needed by those around him. He got the prove of that he had a finally that loved him. Although he died, he didn’t die chained at the end of WG. He died at his own term by protecting the first light of his life, his brother. Sorry this is a bit long 😞, I’ve been holding back my comments haha. Anyway, I always skipped this arc when I rewatched OP. That’s why I’m so thankful I can rewatch and cry about this again with you guys, the amazing D Clan!

Honestly, I dont consider Akainu as a villain in this context. Def just trying to do his job just like Magellan. He is doing his job as much as sengoku. Definitely more antagonist, but villains have cruel and malicious intentions, so Blackbeard lol and yeah i hate Akainu too. His sense of Justice can turn evil and then he will be a villain. But not exactly at this context, at least thats what i think. Croc is a villain, but we're rooting for him right now. Moral compass questioned i would say.
