ONE PIECE EP 700/701 | Law’s Backstory! 😢😢💔💔👒👒

Love you all H & J

Oh man Law's back story is just gut wrenching and so heartbreaking and every time I watch it I'm a mess!

PegasusDragon

Also, I feel like Oda didn’t make it completely clear how Luffy was able to unlock Law’s sea prism stone handcuffs. I remember when Luffy and Violet first tried to free him, Luffy actually had the key, but he still couldn’t do it because of the sea prism stone. Then later on, he just unlocks them effortlessly. I’m not complaining, thankfully Law didn’t stay cuffed for another 10 episodes phew 😮‍💨 but it’s one of those moments that makes you go, “Wait, did I miss something?”🤔 But honestly, I feel like Oda’s done this before, where small details get overlooked or brushed past to keep the story moving at a good pace. It’s not a big deal, but it’s stuff like this that really stands out when you’re watching the show slower and not rushing through it. Makes a big difference.

I feel like I completely missed something the first time I watched this. I’m so glad I rewatched it with you guys because that one line from Doflamingo really hit me this time: “If I had gotten my hands on the Op-Op Fruit (Law’s fruit), I could’ve used the national treasure of Mary Geoise.” Like… what?! 🤯🤯 I must’ve been binge-watching too hard back then because I definitely didn’t catch the weight of that line. Now I can’t stop overthinking it. I know you guys aren’t that far into the story yet, but the deeper you get, the more insane the world-building becomes. Everything just keeps expanding. I’m now just on Reddit theories and One Piece podcasts trying to make sense of that one sentence lol 😝

Oh man, I've been both forward to and not ready for these episodes at the same time. Law's back story for me is as tragic as they come. The second episode of this drop may be one the hardest hitting episodes of the show. Top 10 for me for sure

Dylan Drozeski

Btw, Law's home of Flevance was based on Casale Monferrato in Italy. It was the home of an asbestos industry that was linked to the deaths of thousands of people and directly inspired Amber Lead Syndrome. https://www.contrasto.it/stories/white-town/

The worst part about Law's backstory will always be him coming back to rescue his sister and finding the hospital on fire. That moment gave me nightmares for weeks. More than anything, that particular moment was worse than anything in his backstory. Imagine how she must've felt seeing everything go to flames wishing her brother came back sooner.

Starlight Kid

It's gonna be something crazy, let's just saw ive been waiting for this since sabody's Law introduction.

We discussed this and decided against it

So cruel...

~ Bun-sensei's Japanese corner ~ (Getting right into it since I don't have anything to comment... How do you fit so many tragedies into one 20-minute episode...? I believe that's why it strikes so hard.) ___________________________ In the honour of the people of White Town. ~ shiro ~ Meaning: white Reading: shee-ro Kanji: 白 Additional meanings of 白: innocence, innocent person, blank space In Japanese some nouns can be made into adjectives by simply adding an additive at the end of the word. Adding the vowel い ('i" as in 'quarantine') at the end of 白 (shiro) will change it into 白い (shiroi). It also means 'white' but as an adjective and not a noun. The word 白い (shiroi) is used while describing a snow. Then, if you add it before the word 町 (machi) meaning 'city' or 'town' you will get: - 白い町 - - shiroi machi - - white town - These words were visible on the cover of the book that Doflamingo was reading - "白い町 Flevance". "White Town Flevance". So Doflamingo was reading a book about the history of White Town after meeting Law. We can't see his face, since it was covered by the book, but he was definitely contemplating what he read. I wonder, what was he thinking back then...? _______________________ [A part to skip, if you want to] Japanese like the colour white very much since they associate it with many good, tranquil things. It symbolizes the pureness of things which can be further associated with innocence. And that can be further associated with nothingness, blank space or blank card (like Latin expression 'tabula rasa' meaning 'blank slate'). It's a state of purity that can be easily written over and/or sullied. The children are an embodiment of that state. You're probably familiar with Japanese gardens. The empty space of clear, very light-coloured sand and white stones reflects that meaning. Are you familiar with Japanese paintings? They are often without a background - the paintings consists of a few strokes of brushes and the rest of the canvas is left white. Since they see the beauty in the things that were not painted or in the fact that just those few strokes can create a distinct image and move your imagination (that is intentional, it's called yohaku). The same with calligraphy - the art and the beauty is in the shape of the characters written over a white background. The same with nature, flora and fauna. If they see a white animal they will associate it with purity and otherworldliness, often associating it with divine or spiritual powers. The white is the colour of the gods. It is connected to the spiritual and physical purity (particularly in Shinto religion's traditions). You can see that in priests and the Emperor wearing white while taking part in rituals. Additionally, the white is also the colour of mourning. At least, it was until being overtaken by Western influence. But you can still see it and they will dress the dead in white as well. You can also see it in historical movies - the samurai would wore a white kimono while committing seppuku. Aaaaand, the white is present in the national flag of Japan 🇯🇵, meaning that very purity and its relationship with the gods in the light of the rising sun. You can see white everywhere in Japanese aesthetics and philosophy - minimalism, quiet beauty, paper screens, gardens, ceramics, paintings, yohaku, wabi-sabi, snowy panoramas, zen, tea ceremony... Japanese poetry and literature often link white to silence, winter and introspection. White expresses purity, refinement, humility, dignity, simplicity, the unspoken, the invisible, essence, potential. Also, the stillness before transformation. So it is also a metaphor for a new beginning...

In my opinion a top 4 saddest backstory, really all that just for a country is crazy

_Kiing

This backstory is story perfection. 704-706 needs to be a triple!

SomeoneElse

The book Doflamingo had on his face was about the city of white Flevance, Law's home town. Not very important but its something I didn't notice until after my 2nd watch through.

Fold

Absolutely gut-wrenching. This is, without a doubt, the saddest backstory in One Piece for me. It feels painfully real - grounded in the kind of tragedy we've seen in our own world. Like you mentioned, we’ve had our share of horrors with lead in paints, toys, even cosmetics. And we’ve seen firsthand how fear of contagion can turn people cruel - entire populations abandoned, left to suffer. What’s truly heartbreaking is knowing the World Government was aware of it all… and still chose profit over human lives. It’s disturbingly familiar given the state of the world today. Oda’s backstories always reflect real-life issues, but this one cuts the deepest. Now we wait to see what really happened to Corazon and how it ties into Law. Absolute peak storytelling! On a different note, Señor Pink was very different back then! So much so that you didn't recognise him at first! That made me laugh 😂 I think that could be a short 😜

Lucia Petrozzi

This is why when law took out the bullets when he got his cuffs off he looked at the bullets and said “he used lead bullets.”

Nick

I just think this backstory is very unique. They basically have the Family casually doing mob stuff while telling Laws backstory to Baby Five.

Cheddah Slammer

Yeah, the only people that could change an article in the paper, like Doflamingo did would be Celestial Dragons. Law accused Doflamingo of this when they were fighting, and then Doflamingo confirmed it, while also saying, "but its a little bit more complicated". Bad Translations can completely change the context of what someone is saying.

Cheddah Slammer

Wow episode 700 now you guys are finally getting to the peak of the arc! Also no we didn’t let the fact that doflamingo was a celestial dragon slip out early someone was commenting on the translation error of the website you guys were using saying that the translation was wrong instead of just calling doflamingo a celestial dragon. I remember this because I was the one who called it out just in case it was a spoiler but the mods checked and said it was okay. That was back on episode 642 when it was revealed doflamingo was a celestial dragon. But now since you guys are using crunchy roll again we won’t have to worry about any mistranslation errors anymore! Congratulations to your son for graduating I remember the feelings I had around the time of my graduation. I graduated back in 2022 so it wasn’t that long ago but time is flying! 🤗
