In multiple interviews, he’s said Bruce changed his life, and he’s always tried to carry on his spirit and philosophy through his own films. He even said once, “Without Bruce Lee, there would be no me today.” Even though they never met — since Bruce passed away so young — Stephen has paid tribute to him in so many ways on screen. Such as (but not limited to): In Shaolin Soccer, the goalie wears the same yellow-and-black tracksuit Bruce wore in Game of Death, and copies his iconic moves and kicks. In Kung Fu Hustle, Stephen Chow’s character appears shirtless in a white top and black pants — a look that combines elements from Bruce Lee’s appearance in The Big Boss and Way of the Dragon.

Earlier this year, I flew across half the globe to spend some time with my mom during the New Year, after her cancer diagnosis — never imagining how little time we had left. When she suddenly fell into a coma, I booked the next flight — but I didn’t make it in time to be by her side. I’m grateful, though, that I was able to say goodbye over FaceTime just before I boarded the plane. Life is so unpredictable. All we can really do is try to live without regret — to do good, to ourselves and to others, as much as we can. We’re nakama — even if we can’t do much, I hope we can still walk alongside each other emotionally through both joyful and difficult times. Take things at your own pace. If plans need to change at the last minute, that’s totally okay. Just know we’re here for you.
