Tsugumi Ohba has stated in interviews that he wasn’t really inspired by anything, & he wasn’t trying to put meaning into it. He just wanted to explore the ideas of good & evil, & the right of an individual to pass judgement on another individual’s actions, which he compared to being “god-like”. He mentions often putting more focus on creating an entertaining plot. What’s also really cool, he chose the genre of thriller/mystery cuz he didn’t think he would do well writing an action series for Shonen Jump.
