I'm so excited you watched this movie! I've watched it many times, including with my dad who also loves it. Such great messaging not just about ourselves but others. Back in September my Dad and I visited my sister for Fathers Day and her kids my 3 Nieces love this movie have it on all the time. She watched it for the first time with us and liked it to. The youngest whose 3 adores the movie and each song she'll get up and dance. So adorable! Derpy the Tiger is my favourite since I'm a cat lover! <3 xoxo Thank you for everything you both do and just love watching your reactions!

Luluchan? Are you familiar with KPop or Korean Culture? If not, that could be where the disconnect is. As someone who grew up with K-pop and Kdramas, Every scene felt like bunch of Easter eggs. The storytelling was simple, and I think that’s why lots of kids loved it. Imma try to answer the questions you had. Why Rumi was chosen even if she was half demon? Her mom was one of those hunters so in a way it was inherited powers? Rumi’s relationship with Jinu. There’s barely more than an hour of the show, this is probably the best they can show their relationship in such a short amount of time. Jinu telling Rumi his past is a big deal. In Kdramas, most male lead is usually the broken, lots of trauma/tragedy, flawed character type and then you have the female lead saving him from trauma. It’s a trope that fans of Kdramas are so used to, that with him just telling him of his past, is a big deal. But then of course we have a limited time, they have to fall in love fast. Rumi’s resentment to Celine. Celine kept wanting to hide Rumi’s patterns, not accepting her wholeheartedly and loving her for what she is. Though it was not fully explored, what it gave me is that, Rumi didn’t need Celine to fully accept her half demon or what, as long as she accepted herself and Mira and Zoey did. Honestly Celine needs her own movie and being the adult, she should’ve been the one to push Rumi to be her true, half demon, flawed self. There’s the thing that Adult should’ve known better, but we, too, can learn from the young ones too. The mythology and themes that weren’t fully explored are pretty much, in my opinion, things that a Kdrama fan or K-pop fans can easily spot, I think those were the Easter eggs for me. I think this was a movie for fans already and they didn’t think it was going to be big like this. And the singing! It was actually a good mix ahahah. When you have young ones who watch Sing or Trolls, the amount of singing in this movie was perfect. I hope I answered some of ur questions. But yeah, it’s either you love the movie or you dont care for it. Also, they have two movies coming out, maybe in some of those they explore more of the themes and characters that were not fully explored in the first movie.

I’m going to be the odd one out on this one, but it’s not my cup of tea and I didn’t like it. Although I understand the message, imo the story missed and lacked in a lot of things, but specifically storytelling. We never got to understand why Rumi was chosen as a hunter although she was half demon, Rumi’s relationship with Jino was rushed at best, Rumi’s resentment toward her adoptive mother Celine is introduced but not fully explored, the Korean mythology shown in the movie was not explained or explored, none of the themes they introduced (mythology, music-world vs demon world, fandom culture, idol issues, identity/shame) had the time to build and be properly fleshed out, therefore none of them had the impact it should have had….aaaaaaand (this is just my personal opinion as I’m not into pop or musicals) there was too much singing. And I’m just scratching the surface, there’s a lot more that could be said. Sorry to the fandom

Last comment!🙏😂 Firstly, as a longtime Kpop fanatic, I approve this movie as being insanely accurate to the world of Kpop. They even used real Kpop companies (The Black Label, JYP), Kpop producers & songwriters, & based the characters on an amalgamation of multiple famous Kpop idols. The references are literally everywhere & it’s amazeballs!😍 I knew you were going to like the messages in this movie!! Even though the plot, characters, & setting is very culturally specific, the messages about accepting our flaws & differences, learning to overcome our inner demons, & trusting each other when facing our fears, it all resonates with anyone. And I totally agree that the plot flies—all lean, no fat! The VAs (singers included) were incredible, which added even more to the diverse characters. I love how the Huntrix girls are relatable & quirky, & the sisterhood they have is heartwarming. Jinu is such a well-written & complicated antagonist, adding an unexpected layer to the plot by growing from self-serving to self-sacrificing. And if you really dig in, there are hundreds of details through the movie that reference Kpop culture, historical Korean mythology & culture, k-drama, anime, etc packed into every frame, character design, set design, lyrics, all of it! This was clearly a passion project (that Sony couldn’t recognize & sold to Netflix for cheap). This movie went beyond my expectations! Lastly, the BTS recording during the credits is not the voice actors, but 3 members of TWICE (Jihyo, Jeongyeon, & Chaeyoung) who made a version of “Takedown” for the soundtrack. And what an addictive soundtrack!!😂 And a last shoutout for Ian Eisendrath for pushing this movie to be written like a musical. Seriously, all of the songs sound like radio Kpop songs, but function like they should in a musical format. That’s so freaking impressive!!

Aren’t you glad I’m a Koreaboo?😂 So, the scenes where they win weekly awards… that’s a reference to hugely popular weekly music shows they have in Korea. It’s kinda like American Band Stand or Soul Train, where idol groups perform their latest singles during their promotional periods. Winners are chosen from that week’s performances by viewers’ votes online or by phone. As a result, groups sometimes perform up to 5x a week for 1-6 weeks, all depending on how long they choose to promote. That’s why kpop is so well-known for live performances, they are performing regularly which helps them gain experience on stage quickly.

The singing voices for Huntrix are Audrey Nuna (Mira), Rei Ami (Zooey), & EJAE (for Rumi). EJAE is a former SM Entertainment kpop trainee (for 10 years) who was told she was too old to debut (in her early 20s), so she turned to songwriting instead & has written some of the biggest hits in Kpop (Red Velvet “Psycho”, Aespa “Drama” & “Armageddon”). She contributed to writing the KDH soundtrack on the songs “Golden”, “How It’s Done”, “Your Idol”, “What It Sounds Like”, & “Hunters Mantra (Prologue)”. And she was cast as Rumi cuz the filmmakers thought she was perfect after hearing her voice repeatedly in the song demos. The voices for the Saja Boys are Andrew Choi (Jinu), Neckwav (Abby), samUIL Lee (Romance), Kevin Woo (Mystery), & Danny Chung (Baby). Andrew Choi is a Kpop songwriter & also attempted to become an idol; he also introduced EJAE to a kpop songwriting camp, which set off her career. Vice versa, EJAE recommended Andrew Choi to the KDH filmmakers for Jinu’s singing voice. Kevin Woo is a former Kpop idol from U-KISS, & Danny Chung is one of the music producers from The Black Label, which is a sub-label of YG Entertainment (one of the Big 4 Kpop companies, along with SM Ent., JYP, & HYBE).

Glad you watched the English dub, cuz it has Ahn Hyo-seop (from the k-drama Business Proposal) as Jinu. He wasn’t in the Korean dub, which is upsetting. Btw, the song playing when Jinu bumps into Rumi is also from Business Proposal—which is a fantastic show!
