This comment is so up my alley - I had to pause everything and read it in one breath. The idea of eternity sounds appealing until you actually unpack it. I honestly don’t think most people who say they want immortality are chasing the experience itself - more likely they’re imagining the fame, legacy, or bragging rights that would come with discovering it. Because let’s face it, eternal life on Earth wouldn’t turn us into enlightened beings - it’d fast-track us into overpopulation, nonstop conflict, and a society where nothing feels meaningful anymore. What really gets me is how we can’t fully comprehend eternity, yet we’re obsessed with chasing it anyway. Just look at how medicine and technology keep extending our lifespan like it’s a competition. We keep pushing toward forever without truly considering what “forever” actually means! And in all this, somewhere along the way, we forgot what it truly means to live.

My apologies for another essay...;; _____ Looking back at those episodes reflexively, I really like the concept of the Eternity Devil. We are thought in the previous episodes that Devils are created from fears that humans have. And if we put 'eternity' at the spotlight... Well, people have always dreamed about eternity - the eternal life, eternal youth etc. So it is something we, as a humanity, admire, look for or hope for. The philosopher's stone, the elixir of youth, achieving the godly status, becoming a being that isn't bound by mortal life etc. There is a lot of it throughout the religions, history and legends. But if you think more deeply about the concept of eternity, it gets scary pretty quickly. First, it can be depicted as it is in the show - the eternity of a moment in time. We are shown one second or maybe even less amount of time that is lengthened into an eternity. The time never moves forward nor does the space. You're stuck in one moment forever, you'll never see anyone else before you die from hunger (or rather it would be thirst what kills you first, if they weren't stuck in a hotel with toilets). Or maybe you yourself will never move in time either as depicted in other stories which explore that type of a concept (whereas here thier bodies move, they get hungry, their metabolism works just fine). You will be forever stuck in the nothingness of this moment. Just you and your thoughts, alone, unmoving, unchanging. Forever. Like... FOREVER. It is really difficult for our brains to even grasp what 'eternity' is... I mean, can you even imagine that? Whenever I try to do that, I get pushed back by my own brain telling me the time is moving. Eternity is the same as infinity and it is something our brains just cannot grasp instinctively even if we do understand the concept. Second, the eternity can be depicted in another way, which I think is more popular in stories and it is to achieve the eternal life. Like 'Frieren' or elves in 'Lord of the Rings' or androids and sci-fi stories and such. You never die (at least not from natural causes, or in some other stories never-ever), and it gets scary when that eternity extends only on you. So all you care about disappears before your eyes as you move forward... Again, forever. You never stop going forward in time and it is very scary. Things that have no end are instinctively scary to us. Third, the eternity can be depicted as above, you never age/you live forever etc. but it extends on humanity. This concept was also studied but I only know those dystopian stories that talk about it... And it makes sense. If we all never die... Either we get overpopulated and war happens, or mass extinction, or some other end of the world scenario... Or we all get stucked in this dystopian world where nothing really ever changes, everything stays the same forever. The lack of change is equal to death in such case - if nothing ever changes nor happens there really is no point in living. The nature moves forward and keeps changing, the world does, the atoms do and the living beings do too. Everything staying the same way for all eternity is a true opposite of life, not death which is a part of it. In science, we say that things unmoving are the real nothingness. The absolute zero temperature, when atoms freeze completely would be such a state (if the whole universe would be in that state). Because it is not the case, because things are moving and changing, because the entropy is always rising, the world is alive.

And then they say "He's easy". That's exactly how children think when they think they "oversmart you" lol

That’s an incredible comment and you managed to catch all the various references too! I just wanted to clarify something for those who don’t know: the starcase is actually called the Penrose stairs, also dubbed the impossible staircase. The concept was first created by Swedish artist Oscar Reutersvärd in 1937 (in the form of a triangle) and later independently rediscovered and made popular by Lionel Penrose and his son in the 50’s. M.C. Escher was fascinated by it and used it in his famous “Ascending and Descending” lithography.

Makima plays Denji like an instrument. So manipulative

Yes Jason. dōzo (どうぞ) can be used in different ways — for example, it can mean “Here you go / take it away”, “Please come in” (after someone knocks), or “Now over to you, Heather”

Aki bribing Denji & Power with chewing gum to behave. I’m dead.🤣 They’re like little kids!

The introduction of the Gun Devil using Aki’s backstory is a powerful way to encapsulate the devastation it causes, wiping out 1.2 million people in 5 minutes. But the scene also shows the emotional impact it left on Aki when he lost his family in an instant; the how & why he came to be a Devil Hunter. Placing this story within the scene of Makima seducing Denji, it creates a disconnect when Denji fails to comprehend the gravity of the Gun Devil’s overwhelming strength & the impossible nature of Makima’s request. The audience learns the force of the Gun Devil’s scary power, but Denji is blissfully ignorant due to being baited by Makima promising to grant Denji any wish he wants. The madness created by the Eternity Devil trapping Special Division 4 on the 8th floor is a riot! Denji’s napping, Arai’s wrapped in blankets having a panic attack, Kobeni was panic drinking toilet water, Power’s plotting world domination by winning the Nobel Prize thru raising sales taxes as the Prime Minister, & Himeno & Aki gotta split their last cigarette!🤣 This is the perfect recipe for irrational fear to manifest. OMG!—Power eating the food supply & blaming Denji. That’s more fuel to the fire! It’s a hilarious insanity that captures the sudden loss of reality & distinction of time—the timeless loop of eternity, of infinity. Plus, the influence of M.C. Escher’s staircase artwork in the endings for the Eternity Devil arc adds more to it. The hotel also draws inspiration from the film Inception based on its layout. Tatsuki Fujimoto is a known cinemaphile. You’re going to continue to see these kinds of fun references throughout all his works.
