ONE PIECE ep 235/236 | What the actual BLEEP just happened!?

Usopp also saw and heard the spirit of the merry, also kept the merry floating up until then. I dont think its fair to just say its only cause kaya gave them the ship. They both could have handled the argument better lol

Ozzy Ramirez

luffy literally knew the ship was done for so as captain he made the decision to get another ship. the only thing you can say luffy was wrong about was him not considering usoppโ€™s feelings towards the ship because his best friend gave it to him. thatโ€™s literally it. usopp needed to face the truth and realize the ship was gone as we seen later on in the arc. if anything BOTH luffy and usopp were in the wrong here. ESPECIALLY USOPP.

mal

What are yall talkimg about lol. I've always sided with ussop. Luffy was the one that was way out of control

kman

Luffy is carefree about many things, but he takes being a pirate serious. And both he and Ussop know what it means for a man to challenge another to a duel.

Wayne L Bond

The water hitting the Merry to look like it was cryingโ€ฆ that killed me ๐Ÿ˜ข

Nick

yare yare why causing them unneccessary headaches? its crystal clear! hxh 2011 not the old one and same for fmab thats it there is no need to consider the 1% they just have a nostalgia biased based preference. fmab adapts the manga so ofc brotherhood and its newer and majority (99%) prefers this same goes for hxh. makin this a debate brings us nowhere ๐Ÿคฆ they already started with the right versiond why go back?! they are happy and its not a wrong choice either. sometimes people really shouldnt voice their opinion

Kenji

What do you consider the right one? Many people would argue with tge 2 versions on what is tge right one. Same thing fies for fullmetal alchemist. Some people will say original over brotherhood. And some people will say brotherhood over original. Most is an opinion

Juice DaNinja

every time I see this episode I only think "Usopp dude... you have to chill out". He had a hurt ego from the robbery; it's not a good idea to make a choice in this state of mind.

JoJo's is a great series

Adam V.

yea the thing is, when people say "OOH this arc is soo good" what they really mean is that the author is about punch you right in the heart as hard as he can ^-^

IronHeartedDevil

Sanji and Nami have both mentioned being worried about what is going on with Robin. But they also know she can take care of herself and trusting that she can. the money and Ussop situation is a bit more urgent at the moment.

estherrrr

For Luffy's last line my favorite translation is "It's heavy" instead of it's tough. It feels right for Luffy who learns the 'weight' that a captain carries.

Fold

When I first watched the series, I did not like Ussop and this made me hate him. I like him now, but I still hate him during this part. He is acting in a way that is unworthy of their ambitions. To risk the lives of all those around him unnecessarily with the most important aspect of a sea faring group. Ussop's actions show the limited height he can reach as he is, while Luffy's actions show how limitless his potential is. Ussop decided the roof of his ability, while Luffy broke the limit's of his.

Fold

Usopp is the most human crewmember, without any power really, so its only fair the fights like batman, so he needs preparation.

This episode was just so...raw. Loved how Zoro was handling the situation. The best right hand man Luffy could ask for.

Rishabh Gupta

If you think about it, you can understand why Usopp was angry with Luffy for deciding to say goodbye to the Going Merry. From the moment Usopp joined the Straw Hat Pirates, he has always acted like a coward; he has pretty much been a coward his entire life. He's not as strong as Zoro, Sanji, or Luffy, and he feels very inferior. Therefore, he places great value on the Going Merry because it was a gift from his dear friend Kaya, somewhat akin to a dowry, making it feel like the only value he currently brings to the team. However, he felt insecure and uneasy thinking that if Luffy was willing to let go of the Going Merry, it mirrored his own fears of inadequacy and loss.

KingRoger

Though episodes for sure, but necessary for the crewโ€™s growth, a must if they wish to survive in this world and reach the top. Heather said it right. Usopp is leaded by anger, pride, deep insecurities that have never been hidden from us and low self esteem. He feels like the merry right now: weak, useless and broken. The sadder part is that Luffy has never seen him as useless. Luffy has the incredible ability to see what you are really made of, your inner strength and soul, and THAT is what he cares about. He knows how strong you are even before you do. He believes in you even when you donโ€™t believe in yourself. And the crew uses Luffyโ€™s trust and confidence in them as a push to grow and get stronger. Thatโ€™s why heโ€™s the captain. But usopp is not ready yet for the push. He has still some self learning to do, and can only do it by himself. No one can help him with this. Also love Zoro in all this. He is Luffyโ€™s rock. His loyalty never waves.

BashaM

These episodes really get to me every time. Usopp has always felt inferior to the rest of the crew and for him the Merry is what ties him to the SH. With the Merry gone, he feels his role within the crew has come to an end. You can see him wanting to depart with honour (so in my eyes he has already become a great warrior of the sea right there), knowing full well that he didn't stand a chance against Luffy. And Luffy did not go full power, because he cares about Usopp. A captain must make tough decisions even when they break your heart. Tough to watch.

Lucia Petrozzi

Usopp is now the sole captain of the Going Merry. Remember One Piece is a fun and happy little story about silly pirate adventures. I'm not crying you're crying ..... and oh poor chopper this entire time :'(

ic1025

Its not the pride....to Usopp it mirrors his place in the crew and is a proxy of sorts for his own circumstances and insecurities which this event brought forth.

Bethrezan

well it was forshadowed when the strawhats landed on sea again they met a crew that was unorganized, they lost their captain, navigator, etc. everyone had differenr opinion and started to panic, the strawhats commented on this and said wth how can they survive like this in the grandline + during the foxy games they met the other crewmates and they seemed to not care much showing that the bond of the crew is very important but it still needs structure. the strawhats vs aokiji (the ice admiral) was also teasing that the strawhats arent physically strong enough to not get it all effect their mentalwell being aswell, in that moment usopp showed a lot of weakness zoro saw that and told him to go to sleep cuz he is panicking and getting desperate. all these tiny moments led to this. btw the merry means a lot to usopp thats why i wanted u guys to watch the g8 arc cuz the fillers focused on usopps love for the ship a bit aswell. but i couldnt tell you this cuz of spoilers so i couldnt bring that argument to convince yourself to react to g8. sometimes its fine to just listen to me (regie ๐Ÿ˜ˆ)

These episodes plant a seed of maturity in the crew. Everyone is taking something different from this. To me, this is the first time Luffy has to really be a captain. He didn't want to fight Usopp but he has to be strong for his crew. Zoro can't carry this burden with him, none of them can. That's why he said if you waver, who can we trust?

Dylan Drozeski

Honestly think Usopp was fighting Luffy better because he prepared a couple of hours before the fight. Were against the Franky Family he just stormed in their all emotional. The whole situation was heavy always get a knot in my stomach when I watch it again.

The plot thickens! These episodes get me everytime I watch them. Oda does not hold back on the gut punches he can deliver. All I can say is, remember it will get darker before the sun comes out again. These are some of the best episodes of the show so enjoy them with enough tissues nakamas!

Potzi

Oh Reg! Right, it feels like the straw hats are falling apart and they did such a good job of capturing the seriousness of this situation! We couldnโ€™t believe how much it affected us the rest of the evening!๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข What a beautiful journey we are all on!โค๏ธโค๏ธ

Regie Khemvisay

well said bro

Regie Khemvisay

merry crying will never not get me.. ive seen this scene countless of times and i cry all the time. These episodes were *chefs kiss. Money gone, Robin Gone, Merry unrepairable, everyone angry and helpless, its one thing on top of the other and then it crashed. sooooo goood tho. heather, only way to not talk about this and dwell on it so long is move on ahaha, unfortunately we cant do anything and must move forward. that means, next episodessss here we goo!!

Regie Khemvisay

Watching their fight is difficult; it's painful. Even after numerous viewings, the pain persists. I never anticipated witnessing their quarrel, and when I saw the water brushing over Merry, it seemed as though Merry was crying. I was crying alongside her. Usopp experienced a whirlwind of emotions all at once, rendering him irrational: guilt, insecurity, attachment to Merry intertwined with memories of Kaya, and rage towards Luffy for considering giving up Merry. He challenged Luffy to a duel, not just for Merry's sake, but also for his ownโ€”to depart with dignity, like a true man. He might not think he is; that's why he wanted to prove it to others, and himself.

theshittycook

This fight is so hard to watch

Ming GAO

We've never seen the crew like this before, it's such a tonal shift in these episodes. Seems fitting to go along with the shift in animation. Until this point in the story the crew had only been building and strengthening bonds. This sudden change of pace really came out of nowhere.

Sean

If watch this 100 times, I will cry a 100 times

Mel Jaimes

Remember Usopp had time to prepare for his fight with Luffy, he setup the battlefield prior, and he knows how Luffy works as a person and fighter, he won't be able to do this all the time. That being said, Usopp definitely underestimates himself. These two episodes are so incredible to me because the dialogue feels so real and true to each character and feels like a fight that could actually happen between two people. It's not something fabricated just to happen in a story but something we see plenty of times in real life where friends/family fight this way. There's so many shows/stories that never have fights like this that feel so authentic and real, that shatter us to pieces just by experiencing these characters we love fight. I think it's a testament too to the characters here in One Piece that we care so much and feel so bad watching them have this fight.

Christopher LoBosco Jr.

This is very true as well! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ weโ€™ve been going back and forth all evening talking about this episode!๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ’”

Jason DeVan

To be fair. Usopp had prep time and knew what luffy was capable of. That's why usopp put up a good fight. It was also a duel, not a life or death situation.

Eric Quan

Luffy wasn't gentle at all. He gave a Gomu Gomu no Bullet, a way stronger version of a Gomu Gomu no Pistol. And there was no lesson that he was giving Ussop. Ussop disrespected him, left the Crew and challenged him! Luffy took the duel for the seriousness that it was.

Jason DeVan

LOVE these stretch of episodes starting from these 2, it is gonna be WILD. Also hope you have time to read this! Usopp did all this because he sees himself in the merry. Usopp just got through humiliating events where he can't even hold the responsibility of the crew to keep money and gets utterly beat on by back street gangs which the rest of the crew took down very easily. Usopp's insecurities of being a regular human built up all throughout this show, since he said: "I've been thinking about this for a long time". He sees that he would eventually get abandoned by his crew because he is useless like the merry. This is why usopp had so many scenes where he cried clutching at the legs of his crewmates saying sorry and saying he is worthless, not to get sympathy from the viewers, but to show us all the built up insecurities and low self perception he's gotten from being in this crew. This also shows that the reason he dueled luffy for the ship is to regain his pride and to counter the insecurities he has been feeling being the "weak and irresponsible" member of the crew. Luffy accepted the duel because he has respect for Usopp (as a person, not pity respect for his weakness).

Ropside

Respect to Usopp for putting up a fight. Awesome character moments for both Usopp and Luffy, especially Luffy. As Zoro says "This is what it means to be a captain. If you waver, who can we trust?"

Martin Hagen

also the reason usopp fights so well against luffy compared to franky is bc he's able to plan his fight..usopp is a long range fighter he can't have multiple ppl coming at him at once or he loses his leveridge. and he knows luffy's weak points well and utilizes his weapons to it's max ability so it's more effective. otherwise as a support, usopp is a very good fighter and wins his fights most of the time given he's confident enough and studies his opponent a bit from afar

Gigi

ohhh brother what an iconic but sad episode. at first i think everyone watches and thinks has usopp lost his mind he's being irrational, it's JUST a ship. but that's the point to the convo, he's being irrational bc it's about more than the ship. usopp joined when merry joined, merry is a representation of usopp's efforts towards the team and without it he has no purpose. which is why when luffy says it as it is and says usopp is not a shipwright and "if you don't like it, get off-" it confirms his anxieties and doesn't want to be on the ship as a burden. the fight between them is so good/heartbreaking too. it's usopp going full out proving himself before he leaves, but at the same time the only reason he's able to go all out is bc he knows luffy won't get srsly hurt...and luffy knows the same which is why he takes it cause it's a sad losing battle for usopp. i especially loved how the crew's reactions showed their personalities, sanji not allowing any of them to go too far and say things they don't mean, nami literally closing her ears and shutting her eyes while seeing them fight bc of her own past and bc she knows the impact of saying things you don't mean and it possibly being one of your parting words, zoro being a rock to luffy, chopper wanting to heal usopp regardless of "honour" and "pride".

Gigi
