It’s a psychological mindfvck of reality vs “just your imagination”. Filmmaker Satoshi Kon was a genius in crafting surrealism & unnerving suspense!

That's why Usopp is acting so childish,prideful, and insecure. Robin on the other hand is almost 30 and has spent 20 years running away from the government, she brings this more "real world" life of a pirate into view and force our crew to deal with the powers of the world around them and to take their adventure trip more seriously.

Luffy and Zoro are typically strong enough to fight off the big threats. Sanji is strong, but there's oftentimes more critical things to deal with beyond just beating a big guy.
