I drafted a cool scene for Refrain, but I'm not sure if it would make the final edit. Decided to post it here for your general enjoyment:

“Your bravado might’ve been impressive, had I not been able to smell the fear on you—ripe and rank, like a dog that knows it's about to be kicked.”

Skidmark bared his teeth. “Who the fuck are you calling a dog?”

The villain didn’t flinch. Didn’t even look at him. Just turned and started walking, casual as you like, like he wasn’t showing his back to practically the entire villain population of Brockton Bay.

“It's easier to be terrified of an enemy you admire,” he said, half over his shoulder. The door hissed open, and cold air spilled in, ruffling his hoodie. “You will learn to admire me—in time.” He paused for a moment, then added in a tone half-amused. “Any who truly believes themselves unkillable can follow. I am gracious enough to indulge, for there is no finer art in this craft of ours than to take a person into deep waters and let them discover themselves.”

With that final word, he stepped out. The door clicked shut behind him.

Nobody followed.
