I just want to write something as short as I can after watching these episodes. If you're only interested in my reaction and not my personal thoughts then don't worry about it xx that's fine. But I did want to give some insight into part of my reaction to a comment from last night.
I'm not sure if many of you know, but if you watch my One Piece videos you will have heard about it. In South Africa we have a huge issue with farm murders. These are targeted, very violent attacks and murders that happen on a large scale.
But before I get to that, let me just say - you all probably know, South Africa has a bad reputation for the Apartheid from long ago (it ended the year before I was born I believe), and as a country we've been working very hard and have many official laws set in place to rectify the mistakes of the past, or at least help people recover from them as best as possible. There are tons of Black Economic Empowerment laws set in place to insure that previously disadvantaged people be employed into positions of power and are compensated well.
There is a portion of South Africans, particularly people of a specific culture and political group, that believe all white South Africans should be brutally murdered to rectify for what happened in the past - here is a video of the EFF leader at a rally singing a song about killing all white farmers as an example of the kind of people that harbour these beliefs: https://youtu.be/dMuXcUKtzaA
Thousands of white farmers, farm workers, women and children have been beaten, raped and boiled alive by these kind of people, because they believe that this is justice. This kind of attitude extends not only to farmers of course, but to the "boer" community (emphasis on Afrikaans white people in South Africa).
I am an Afrikaans person living in South Africa that had absolutely nothing to do with Apartheid. White people make up less than 9% of the South African population, and yet I am supposed to believe that I'm better off beaten, boiled, raped and killed, as opposed to living in the country I was born in?
Therefore, after watching Anna's village being slaughtered, when I looked at the chat and saw someone was talking about "Christians who did things that are just as bad", of course I would get worked up. These are not pre-recorded videos, where I can take a few deep breaths before responding and consider the person's intentions. In that moment, it felt to me like the murder of the village was being downplayed because other Christians, somewhere, did really bad things. It just hit too close to home, so I asked the viewers if we could just not do that.
Imagine if you told your friend your dad just died, and they immediately respond with "but men are a bad gender anyway, they mistreat women". Of course you'll react emotionally and want to defend your dad, because just because SOME men do bad things, doesn't make it okay for your dad to have suffered. Even though he was a man, you know he was a very good man and never mistreated anyone. You know? Sorry, just trying to make it more understandable, since maybe not everyone understands how I may have felt in that moment. Could I have responded more amicably? Probably - but I have no media training and like I said, it just reminded me of the current situation in South Africa. I didn't appreciate the de-emphasizing of the deaths of the men, women and children of Anna's village. They may have been Christians and OTHER Christians in that time had done horrible things, but the people of that village were innocent and their deaths, at least in that moment, I didn't want to make light of.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I just wanted to give some insight into my response/reasoning for it. I understand the cycle of suffering and the reason for its existence, but somewhere it needs to come to a stop.
Hurting innocent people because you've been hurt is not justice.
