I just want to write something as short as I can after watching these episodes. If you're only interested in my reaction and not my personal thoughts then don't worry about it xx that's fine. But I did want to give some insight into part of my reaction to a comment from last night.

I'm not sure if many of you know, but if you watch my One Piece videos you will have heard about it. In South Africa we have a huge issue with farm murders. These are targeted, very violent attacks and murders that happen on a large scale.

But before I get to that, let me just say - you all probably know, South Africa has a bad reputation for the Apartheid from long ago (it ended the year before I was born I believe), and as a country we've been working very hard and have many official laws set in place to rectify the mistakes of the past, or at least help people recover from them as best as possible. There are tons of Black Economic Empowerment laws set in place to insure that previously disadvantaged people be employed into positions of power and are compensated well.

There is a portion of South Africans, particularly people of a specific culture and political group, that believe all white South Africans should be brutally murdered to rectify for what happened in the past - here is a video of the EFF leader at a rally singing a song about killing all white farmers as an example of the kind of people that harbour these beliefs: https://youtu.be/dMuXcUKtzaA

Thousands of white farmers, farm workers, women and children have been beaten, raped and boiled alive by these kind of people, because they believe that this is justice. This kind of attitude extends not only to farmers of course, but to the "boer" community (emphasis on Afrikaans white people in South Africa).

I am an Afrikaans person living in South Africa that had absolutely nothing to do with Apartheid. White people make up less than 9% of the South African population, and yet I am supposed to believe that I'm better off beaten, boiled, raped and killed, as opposed to living in the country I was born in?

Therefore, after watching Anna's village being slaughtered, when I looked at the chat and saw someone was talking about "Christians who did things that are just as bad", of course I would get worked up. These are not pre-recorded videos, where I can take a few deep breaths before responding and consider the person's intentions. In that moment, it felt to me like the murder of the village was being downplayed because other Christians, somewhere, did really bad things. It just hit too close to home, so I asked the viewers if we could just not do that.

Imagine if you told your friend your dad just died, and they immediately respond with "but men are a bad gender anyway, they mistreat women". Of course you'll react emotionally and want to defend your dad, because just because SOME men do bad things, doesn't make it okay for your dad to have suffered. Even though he was a man, you know he was a very good man and never mistreated anyone. You know? Sorry, just trying to make it more understandable, since maybe not everyone understands how I may have felt in that moment. Could I have responded more amicably? Probably - but I have no media training and like I said, it just reminded me of the current situation in South Africa. I didn't appreciate the de-emphasizing of the deaths of the men, women and children of Anna's village. They may have been Christians and OTHER Christians in that time had done horrible things, but  the people of that village were innocent and their deaths, at least in that moment, I didn't want to make light of.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I just wanted to give some insight into my response/reasoning for it. I understand the cycle of suffering and the reason for its existence, but somewhere it needs to come to a stop.

Hurting innocent people because you've been hurt is not justice.

oh wow didn't expect you to start watching 3-gatsu no lion so soon. Was thinking about donating so you would watch it at some point, but wasn't sure because your schedule is always so filled up. That's a really great surprise :D

uhum

Interesting, you see it with South African point of view, I see it with European French vision about this part of history (We like Celts as our old "ancestors", and saw England as rivals all over history), and a Japanese, write about christians, war and violence in Europe with some kind of neutral vision, (American people probably see it with their own stereotypes about Vikings too ^^.) I hope this don't affect you too much to enjoy watching Vinland (I relate a little, my father is currently a white farmer in Rwanda)

I'm still not entirely sure what "simp" means XD

In summation, as you’ve stated before, “the oppressed have become the oppressors”. What a shame indeed. Mere hope won’t be sufficient to stop such cruelty plaguing your country but, regardless, I hope a change happens. Soon. Edit: on a lighter note I recently noticed the Japanese word for priest sounds awfully similar to “simp”.

what is your twitch account name? do you know why you were banned? were you warned?

Animaechan

Managed to join the stream for the last 2 episodes so I didn't even hear your thoughts about episode 14 until now but it was really interesting to hear your thoughts. It reminded me of the discussions you had in your Aot s3pt2 videos. Anyways can't wait for the next set of reactions. If I ever get unbanned from your stream chat I'd love to talk about some of the coming episodes since they're some of my favorites in the series.

Yeah that video is the one I could find the quickest but there is a lot of worse stuff to be found about not only the rally’s but what they actually do to people... obviously not the political leaders themselves, they get people to do their dirty work for them. But it’s sickening what they do to even children. I doubt the person who sent the message really thought about what they were bringing up, but in that moment, in light of what we were watching, I think it was insensitive... i could’ve maybe said that better but I was obviously a tad emotional in that moment

Animaechan

This was a fun stream. Can’t wait for next weeks reaction, 17-19 are some of my favourite episodes from the show.

Thanks Matty ♥️ I was worried how I might have come across

Animaechan

Hasn't watched yet but just read what you wrote. Yes I agree 100% on what you said. It's sickening how it is even a discussion if those villagers deserved or maybe got karma'd to be pillaged like that. Their religion's sins are not theirs to be crucified for. Heck, a parent's sins shouldn't ever be paid or even share the guilt of by their children or descendants. But with all that said, hope that whoever wrote that comment realized how insensitive and wrong that was to believe if he even actually believed that. P.S. Oh and that youtube video... WOW just... wow.. that is so fucked up. They're really singing and dancing around chanting how you guys should be shot to kill. Sshh...

NocLucii

ah shit, i remember that and i didn't connect the two.. dont worry your reaction wasnt too much
