That's a good question! It's a little multi purposed: 1. Sometimes when I'm drawing at night I want to make things easier on my eyes and I'll make the background really warm so it's lower contrast. 2. Sketching on a mid-tone instead of pure white can be nice for when I want to take a sketch a bit further, which I can do just by adding moments of white for highlights and an additional warm tone that can transform the background color into a flesh tone. So it functions as a bit of a more neutral atmospheric tone in a way.
