It is canon to the anime, as it adapts the 5th novel after the show adapted 1-4. They cut and added a bunch of stuff for this movie, they cut a lot of extra Megumin and Kazuma scenes and added that entire last act with the fight against Sylvia. (In the novel she straight up dies after being shot with the Railgun), the joke being that Megumin's little sister stole all the glory and Megumin couldn't do a thing to help Kazuma in the end, leading to her wanting to give up explosion magic. Overall fun reaction, here's hoping for a season 3!
