Cover art — Evil Inc After Dark, Vol 2

Before I release it to the public, I wanted you to see the final art for the new EiAD book — the Kickstarter for which ends next week. I'm absolutely overjoyed with the way that it turned out — mainly because this one took a lot of thinking and re-thinking before I thought it was ready.

It went through two previous iterations before reaching the point that I thought it would make the perfect book cover. Here's a look at the progression...

As you can tell, I really like wraparound covers. That means the front cover and the back cover are one continuous image. (The front cover is on the right-hand side of the image.)

In the first pass, I had the scene set up in the Evil Inc office, and Iron Dragon and Sobek-Ra was reacting to Desi. (And if you look closely at the desk, you'll see that their reaction is extremely enthusiastic.)

But something wasn't clicking for me. I redrew Desi to re-emphasize the title of the book ("Stick ’Em Up"), and I momentarily gave up on the idea of the wraparound cover.

But it still wasn't... right.

So I reached out to supercolorist Alex Heberling and asked for some advice.

Alex suggested changing the scene from the office to a bank vault — and changing the supervillains to bank guards. The idea to show more after-effects from the raised desk (rather than the effects in progress) also came from Alex.

I redrew the illustration, and I received the final a few hours ago.

That's my cover.

I also prefer the second. The backdrop of a bank robbery and security guards commands the immediate connection to the "stick 'em up" theme. The backdrop of the Evil Inc office, with two of her co-workers behind her, still makes it clear that they are excited by what they have seen, but does not necessarily tie directly back to the "stick 'em up" punchline the way that the robbery does.

Yeah, the second cover works better; it is more "on theme". The first gives the odd implication that Iron Dragon and Sobek-Ra were not used to Desi, and you have to wonder why she's posing like that, anyway. The second, w/ the guards having their hands up, yet their expressions having no fear, emphasizes the sexy, playful image I think you want

Well, I must admit that the redrawing really came out better, I think it’s right that you followed Alex’s advice))
