Evil Inc, Tuesday, April 13

When I relaunched Evil Inc in 2016, one of the changes I made was to try to avoid references that would become dated. I noticed that some punchlines that worked well online fell flat in the books — which often came out years later.

I haven't always done a great job of that, but it been something I've paid close attention to.

The Zack Snyder line in this update seemed to much fun to pass up — both in writing and in the illustration possibilities, so I broke my rule. However, I did an alternate panel that will replace it when the book eventually comes out. It looks like this:

I’ve gotta say, the alternate panel is way funnier! And extra punny

Michael Howles-Banerji

Possibly dated material aside... is there some relevance I am missing in a related After Dark episode that would explain R's positioning in Panel 1? Note that I am a fan of the positioning... just that it seems odd to work in that position. Now if I missed an After Dark episode that explains why she might have a little trouble sitting down... then... link?

You just helped me win a bet with my wife. I had $20 that said someone would post that comment within the first hour.

Okay, but potentially dated reference aside, the alternate panel is (I think) much funnier

Dave Lerner

I think what you're doing is very smart and appreciate the effort required. However, dated references aren't a problem if enough context is provided so that someone can intuit it or easily look it up (e.g. top 5 result in search). For example, it can be a little annoying watching a stand-up routine and they just whip out a quick topical punchline that was only in the news for a minute several years ago.

You hit the nail on the head! “Bloom County” was every bit as good as “Calvin & Hobbes” in its day. People still read “Calvin,” but “Bloom” is really hard to enjoy by anyone under 40!

You're being too hard on yourself, Brad. Comics are a timeless medium. I'm sure when I introduce "Bloom County" and "Doonesbury" to my own kids, they'll know who Michael Dukakis was and what the Iran-Contra Scandal was about.

Mr. Nobody

Ok... I might watch that one ... 😂🤣😂

It really feels like the guy has issues...

Thank you! I couldn’t resist!

Brad Guigar

Oh my god... the slow-mo on that movie! 🙄

Miss Match in "Sucker Punch 2!"

Mr. Nobody

I don't think Miss Match was dragging her feet for the Snyder cut. She was probably just moving in slow motion. ;)

I love MM's Snyder Suit; great gag!

Snyder is what happens when your middle school bully gets to direct batman
