I'm sure you likely know by now but this is a flashback arc. I know it's a bit hard to tell since OG Wei Wuxian looks similar to the body he's possessing in the present timeline, but these episodes take place 20 years in the past when WWX and LZ are first meeting

X) Also, you might have forgotten but at the end of episode 2, they said they went back into the past around 20 years back. So they are all young and Wei Ying hasn't started demonic cultivation. (You can see it in how he is fighting and who he is hanging around, (you might remember the purple guy from episode 2 the dynamic is different.)) Episode 3 is more about showing how the dynamics where when they were younger compare to the second episode when you see how they interact with each other in the future, its suttles but you will get it. It will stay in the past now so you will learn some backstory. :)
