The reason why Obi-wan beat Darth Maul was for two reasons: 1) Obi-wan was experiencing anger and rage, which meant he was being fueled by the dark side, hence why he appeared to be quicker and stronger than Qui-Gon Jin. 2) He had seen Darth Maul's trick to breaking a more defensive style and countered the move by striking the hilt with his blade. Qui-Gon also is quite old in this, I believe he was in his like 60's so his strength had been greatly reduced thanks to his age. Keep up the great work!
