Spider is a victim of his circumstances and he's a bridge between worlds almost in the same way Jake was, except that Spider was a baby left behind while Jake made his choice as an adult. He's obviously struggling with being accepted fully on either side and is making his way now as an adolescent learning more about his own identity and where he fits in. Plus his character has clearly only just started out with a view to expanding the role he'll play in the next one - for example, how will it play out with him and Kiri? Will he ever get the opportunity to have his own Avatar? How will his presence impact any future plans from the colonel? By him having that connection to his 'father' he saved the villain for round 3 but exposed a 'weakness' at the same time. I think it lacks foresight or basic empathy to just dismiss his character and say he's useless
