I'm watching this for the first time and am way behind (this season has been a little meh for me, though the Dread Doctors look cool), so this is only speculation. I think Liam is manipulating what he can so that HE appears to be the Alpha and not Scott and is trying to usurp him. I think Don at the end there is quite correct.
