I question Don's media literacy :/ Also his inability to empathize with characters as being people. I.e Elena is gonna have a survival instinct, because that's a normal human thing to have The more time she has to think about it. The more she has to face her own dying, the harder it's gonna get to say no to transitioning That's why she wished she stayed dead so her survival instinct wouldn't get in the way and make her ending up as a vampire. Like if she had stayed dead she wouldn't be going through fear of dying, therefore her survival instinct wouldn't trigger, because she'd already be dead and at peace, therefore she wouldn't be a vampire Bill was able to say no to transitioning because he has a lot of mental willpower to resist the fear of dying. He's a middle aged man. He despises vampires and would rather die than be one. Elena doesn't hate vampires, so she is NOT disgusted about being a vampire. She's just upset she can't have children and grow old, but she also won't have children or grow old if she dies too so Elena can fight her survival instincts to save others [ e.g not running in season 2 from Klaus ] but if she has nobody to save then she can't fight those survival instincts

If Elena had stayed dead she wouldn't be going through the fear of dying, because she would be dead and at peace already Because she's going through the fear her survival instincts are kicking in So she's basically saying "I wish I had stayed dead so I don't have to fight and lose to my own survival instincts and end up transitioning anyway"
