Plus, we never saw him wake up from each jump. So it’s really anyone’s guess.

2025-12-11 00:21:25 +0000 UTCThe ending with the totem is meant to be ambiguous. It’s symbolising that Cobb no longer cares to check anymore. He’s accepted this reality whether it is real or not. He can be with his children again and he has let go of his guilt. It is also an inception on US as the audience as it plants an idea in our mind. The general consensus is that this is the real world as it looks like the totem starts to wobble before it falls. It also shows how he got into the country through the airport and immigration alluding to the earlier comment he makes about how you cannot remember the start of a dream.

To this day, Christopher Nolan hasn't "revealed" if Cobb was actually in a dream or not at the end, he says that the point is that, at that point "it doesn't matter to Cobb, because he's back home with his kids", so he likes leaving it open to interpretation, as that is "more satisfactory" than the alternative. Watch Tenet, mate! One of the most underrated and misunderstood gems by Nolan!
