This is one of the first episodes where they really foreshadow how Steven ends up being in SU Future imo. He pretty much repeats what he says in episode about being able to mess up and then just fix everything way at the end Future. That combined with him not understanding how him sacrificing himself all the time just worsens his mental and worries everyone around him.

Alas I think many viewers often strip the nuance out of the situation here with Steven and Connie and think of it from exclusively Steven's angle (aka "but I saved everyone in the end, so sacrificing myself was for the greater good!") and fail to understand that in doing so, he hurt his best friend by outright giving up on everything they trained together to achieve. To me it's like a mirror image of what happened in the season 2 episode Sworn To the Sword, where Connie got too deep into Pearl's training and started to believe it was her sole duty to protect Steven as his knight, that her own feelings or safety didn't matter. At the end of that episode they agreed to fight TOGETHER from then on out instead of pushing the other away and fighting alone. But in the season 4 finale... Steven pushed Connie away anyways. He pushed her away and decided to end the conflict on his own because he saw it as his sole duty to protect Connie, to protect the Gems, to protect the EARTH. He broke their promise, when they genuinely might've won without any kidnappings at all had they fought that battle together. So yeah, even if his actions ensured her safety, I get why she's upset. It's a really complex situation. Not to mention- in the side shorts for this show (proviso, they’re just fun bonus content that isn’t super related to the plot, which is the only reason I’m choosing to reference a small moment in them here- most reactors never choose to watch them), there’s one that’s basically like, Steven recording a song for “TubeTube” that was released in the middle of season 4’s airing, and one lyric in the song was “I’m still not giving up.” Well… so much for that. He DID give up. He promised he wouldn’t and that he and Connie would face whatever danger came their way hand-in-hand, and then he just… gave up anyways. I very much like how they tie the political fallout of the season 4 finale into the emotional conflict Steven is facing with Connie. It’s the sort of thing where you’re not really expecting how this will all connect at first, but by the end I was like “ohhhh.” Guess Steven just needed to step into Connie’s shoes before he could truly understand her point of view. Sometimes that’s what it takes, I guess. Nanefua slaps booty, she's so good <3
