STEVEN UNIVERSE 5X21 "The Question" Full Length Reaction

Comments

Well... since Novatinuum didn't mention it i suppose i will..... Notice how this Ruby and Sapphire-centric episode is called "The Question", and how that both references and parallels the episode called "The Answer" from Season 2. In that episode Rose simply gave Ruby and Sapphire "an answer" as to the existence of Garnet and she told them to NEVER question that answer. We know that Rose had good intentions but of course... the fact that both Ruby and Sapphire never questioned their own relationship is what eventually led to their fall out with each other when they discovered that Rose was Pink Diamond. Here... now that they have the full truth and had time to re-evaluate their emotions and standing.... now they can officially ASK each other what they want and form an even stronger and more healthy relationship, one that is cemented THROUGH THEM and not from what someone else told them. Really Great stuff overall. Also... this episode made me realize that i really wanted Ruby and Sapphire to spent more time separated (as in... not being Garnet), i might sound a little harsh but i think their individual characters make much more interesting and entertaining interactions with the rest of the cast than when Garnet is around (again... personal opinion).

I really hope you can be Garnet again soon !

I honestly really enjoyed you pausing mid episode to give a bit more chatter where you felt inspired to! It's very fun for me to see how a person's mind is ticking during the midst of a reaction- even more so when it's an example of "reactor predicts something- unpauses episode, either the prediction is SPOT on or 100% opposite of what happens." Those moments are always gold to watch when they do turn up, so I am always welcoming of folks pausing to muse. Thankfully it's actually something that's possible now that you've found a solid method of showing the actual episode in the videos on here. This episode is so darling. I very much agree with what you said, re: this show doing a pretty good job at showcasing varying types of relationships, and characters working through conflicts in said relationships. I forgot to comment on the last episode because I was busy, but that ep and this one very much frame the conflict with Ruby and Sapphire as something of a metaphor for a parental separation. Not QUITE a divorce, because of course as we see from this episode they're committing to making it work on their own terms now, but this definitely gives the vibes of a family dealing with parental figures going through a very rough patch in their relationship, and all the ways that impacts the people around them. (Amethyst spending a whole episode trying to cheer Steven up always read to me as an older sibling figure trying to shield their little sib from the brunt of the emotional ramifications of a parental spat/divorce situation.) I like what this episode does in just a few minutes on the topic of relationships, though. Greg has some nice wisdom... "if it's not what Ruby and Sapphire want, then it's not what *Garnet* wants, right?" And then later on, I enjoy how they showcase the way that having deep affections for someone and wishing to spend your time with them does not negate your own individuality, when one is approaching a relationship in a healthy manner. As Ruby says at the end, this time, being Garnet will be THEIR choice, and they can choose to be together even when they're apart. I think that's a great compromise to make. The song Ruby sings in this episode is SUCH an underrated song in this show IMO- I feel her VA's voice perfectly suits the western theme. There's a bit of like, I dunno, warbling grit to the way she sings in character, and it's peak for the vibes.
