He's so damn capable, but he keeps holding himself back

mikeyventure

It really is :(

mikeyventure

I love that he's finally being challenged in this way as a captain

mikeyventure

Oh that's really interesting that's how he frames it and can totally see it

When i see new people watching this episode for the first time... i always like to refer to one of Oda's quotes from one of the SBS (Question's Corner) Oda said... that if the StrawHats were a blood-related family... these are the roles they would have: First Child/Eldest Son would be Zoro. Second Child is Sanji Third Child is Usopp Fourth son is Luffy Fifth is Nami And of course Chopper is the youngest sibling (Robin would be the Mom, but since she's not present in these scenes she's not really relevant to this analysis). In this conflict between Luffy and Usopp you can see everyone's roles in their "family" pretty clearly. Zoro as the eldest son is the one who always maintains his composure even in the most dire situations, he's the emotional anchor that keeps the family from drifting too far, but at the same time it makes him seem too harsh and unaprochable, but it is a necessary role for him to fulfill. Sanji is the second, and while he shares the toughness and composure of the eldest sibling... he also acts with compassion and understanding, he acts as the bridge between the Eldest Son (Zoro) and the rest of the siblings and makes sure they understand the severity of the situation without becoming a Rock like Zoro does. Usopp as the third sibling looks up at how his older siblings are and he aspires to be as composed and collected as they are but can't quite get there yet, but even so he still finds the courage to stand his ground and act... despite all the fears he has. Even tho Nami in a lot of ways feels like the mom of the group for how often she directs everyone else or even how often she scolds them.... it is in moments like these that we see why Oda says she would be the second youngest sibling. She's not as young as the little brother (Chopper) so she does understand what the situation entails and therefore doesn't directly interfere, but still..... she doesn't have the inner strengh or composure to remain calm, she cries and screams at the others when she's in a situation she can't control. And finally we have Chopper... who acts as the youngest sibling of the group, both in a literal sense but also because he's the newest member of the Crew besides Robin. He doesn't fully comprehend the situation... only that he's sad that his family is fighting, and because of that lack of comprehension he tries to rush and help the member of the family he sees as the most hurt, and that is when Sanji stops him to make him understand the stakes. Zoro could've also done this but he would've been too cold and blunt with Chopper... so it's good that Sanji was the one who catched him, cuz he perfectly understands the stakes but he also knows how to have tact with the others (as i mentioned earlier... he's the bridge). And well..... i don't think i need to explain how Luffy fits into all of this.

Yeah theres a lot to be said for Usopps character growth in these past few episodes. He is a very prideful person and has a lot of strong feelings for the Merry, especially when you consider that it was given to them by Kaiya. But this is also the moment where Luffy finally learns what it means to be the Captain. Its one thing to go and fight the tough enemies and save the people he cares about. But its a completely different thing to be a person worthy of respect of his crew and make the hard decisions. Truly an important piece of development for the crew as a whole.

Oh, I agree. Definitely one of the best fight scenes, both on an emotional level and just seeing Usopp give as good as he got. Genuinely the best we've ever seen him fight so far, which really shows just how dangerous he can be when the stakes are high enough for him.

Truly a heartbreaking turn of events
