They're very close, and complement each other. Compulsion can be pure mental command however, and impose ideas. Hypnotism is actually a more limited version, in that it must be spoken with eye contact and is more a...coercion rather than command. Hypnotism can make you think it was your own idea, while compulsion is more, you MUST obey. It's hard, because they are very, very similar. But just think of compulsion as something stronger, and hypnotism just augments compulsion to make it more powerful.

With how I have seen both skills worked it seems to amount to the same thing of the user controlling the targets body and possibly their mind as well.
