Wow… not sure how this happened but I missed an entire chapter. I went straight from trust to mortal without reading wounded. No wonder I thought something was wrong.

It’s just that this is the first time we are hearing about a life threatening injury that the POV character is apparently already aware of and actively trying to fix. Also, while I’m glad that there are things she can’t do immediately, I’m not sure why this is one of them… it makes sense that between spirit, healing, and creation, she should be able to do this. Meanwhile, she can genetically engineer people in a snap.

And I will probably be going back to add in more phantom pains in editing because I forgot to do that, but as to why she didn't know...well, it comes back to her just now figuring out how to see living spirits. She doesn't instantly know how to do everything.
