I think one of the most interesting things about The Americans is that apart from being a series about spies it's a series about an open marriage. That makes it more of show about our poliamorous time than the conservative 80s

One of the things I'm reminded of about why I liked The Americans (aside from the generally great acting and writing) is how it played against the "gadgets and gunplay" tropes of your standard spy story in totally believable ways. Yes, there were still both of those things, but I think it "realistically" portrayed how the majority of spycraft is social engineering and human intelligence, and how non-"black-and-white" those situations can be. The Jennings and the other Soviet agents are not mindless automatons in the service of the state. The Jennings' sham-marriage is actually stronger ultimately than American hero Stan's is. I could go on. Also, personally, as someone who came of age in the 80s and had very little understanding of what was going on outside of just how obviously absurd Reaganism was, I appreciate the nuanced "adult" perspective of how the Cold War was playing out in that period.
