July 2021 Q&A

Hey everybody! Due to the way my schedule panned out, I'm going to be doing the monthly livestream Q&A next Sunday 8/1 at 2pm PDT. Leave any questions you want answered here or message them to me or whatever floats your boat!

Ask me about anything: process, cop shows, The Americans, my blog posts, TV shows you like, The Emmys, or whatever!

I'll have a general channel update later this week.

This is a bit of a long question. Hope you don't mind. One thing I noticed about your 'wire' video is that you didn't address the fact that several lead characters claim that the war on drugs "ruined" the police department because they don't know how to solve murders anymore. This is an idea that I believe has also been voiced by david simon and it wasn't until a few months after I finished the show that I realized how flawed this idea was. Even if we accept that the police were supposedly "better" at solving murders prior to the start of the drug war, there was no way that the police were solving murders in an equitable manner. I doubt a cop in the 1960's at the height of the civil rights movement spent as much time and energy solving the murder of an african american man as they did for when investigating the death of a white man. Additionally, according to the book "The Second Coming of the KKK" the police bureau in portland oregon had a direct partnership with the KKK in the 1920's. Did you notice that this false nostalgia about the capabilities of policing was present in the wire when you were making your video? Additionally, will you at all touch more on america's nostalgic views of policing and it's connections to racist hate groups like the KKK in future videos? I know you already discussed nostalgia to some degree in your earliest videos on shows like dragnet, but I was wondering if it might be expanded upon. Thank you.

One of my dreams in life, is to, find old critics year-end lists, for TV shows, stretching back very far, possibly to the 1980s, and, this is my question, as a TV critic, yourself, you find giving praise for a show, will date in several years? Like, when critics initially praise a show for the series of episodes it puts out for a specific year, will, that praise still hold up in future years?
