I chatted with Jessie Gender about Black Mirror and Star Trek

I've been working on a video about Black Mirror (it'll be out next week) and when I reached the episode USS Callister in season 4, I was struck by the juxtaposition of a sci-fi show that is often hopeful and idealistic (Star Trek) and one that is so often dark and bleak (Black Mirror)

So I decided to call the biggest Star Trek fan I know to talk about those two approaches and where those wildly different outlooks come from.

Topics discussed:
- USS Callister & Star Trek's idealism
- Critiquing society vs modeling a better one
- San Junipero, The Last of Us & happy endings
- What holds back some almost great episodes of Black Mirror

It's a wide-ranging discussion but I think you're going to like it!

This was a great interview! I loved all of Jessie's thoughts. (Side Note: Please give star trek a shot. I know there are a ton of shows and movies but even as a hardcore fan I have not seen all of it......yet. The original series is purely episodic and TNG mostly is, so you can kind of pick and choose what to watch.)
