Trying to decide the dynamic as kids. I think Edwin was kinda too smart/apathetic most of the time like if he was ‘bad’ he was sent to him room to be alone except he liked it so it really wasn’t a punishment, and his parents were prob like… originally too lenient/soft (out of response to how their parents were) they eventually figure it out dw. In my mind Edwin prob was a ‘picky’ eater (texture adverse or arfid, prob stomach issues #gerd gang) just never wanted to eat, was prob underweight most of the time. Meanwhile Portia was like the tallest/biggest kid in town at her age, not picky at ALL, she prob would eat anything and was def like daddy’s girl. Prob a bit of a tattle tale, bossy, would get mad for not following the rules, and very people pleasy. The matsumoto’s would help babysit a bit, specifically grandma Underhill (Edwin’s maternal grandma) due to Portia’s dad working + raising baby alone, and Charlie and them were good friends. Their kids hated each other, BUT Portia was prob the only kid who’d eat the food they made, very happily, ask for seconds. Obvi Edwin couldn’t handle Portia getting the praise, and Portia would prob be like ‘ur such a baby’, so then he’d actually eat his food out of spite. So obvi parents pitted them against each other for good.

By middle school Edwin was bullied p heavily for a variety of reasons, chubby, socially awkward, blunt, quiet, ‘weird’, being the new kid in town since he didn’t officially move there until then. Portia was also bullied, she was loud and prob annoying, bossy, and big, had these big buck teeth and orange hair, so her name was Portia Porkchop. While Edwin kinda turned in on himself, becoming more insecure, upset, etc, Portia kinda doubled down, adopting more of a ‘F-You’ attitude, and eventually grew up and became a queen bee. She wasn’t popular? But their town was small, she was tough, and kinda reached the peak of popularity/no one messed with her cause she’d retaliate and was smart, she’d kinda put u in your place before it could get worse. Edwin unfortunately wasn’t so quick with it/plus adopted a more passive ‘I don’t care’ while caring very deeply which would be shown in his ‘emotional’ outburst aka fighting, losing said fight, he wasn’t afraid to say what he wanted, but he wouldn’t help his rep.

Portia was very jealous of his good home life, and school work etc was just very easy for him, where as he was very jealous of her popularity, and her social skills. They’d fight most of the time, but it was more verbal compared to their physical fights as kids (hair pulling, name calling, etc) but they also just CANT STAY AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. And Portia and Edwin are kinda the only ones aware that things are crazy, like their school mates are an odd bunch (this included them) so often time Portia and Edwin are kinda side eying each other at their friends since technically they are the smartest kids in school (Portia and Edwin are academic rivals).

As an adult edwin def is the unfortunate lactose intolerant of the friend group, tummy problems, he’s more picky but also lazy and prob has a lot of body image problems/disordered eating, ‘I’ll just sleep instead of making dinner….’ Depressed. Kinda messy. Once Portia enters the scene, I think she’s kinda aware, and demands dinner/makes dinner a lot, and kinda keeps him on track. She has 0 money, so she often complains about being unable to buy groceries she wants, and Edwin’s like ‘I’ll buy them’ so he buys, she cooks, 🤝. He eventually blames her for making him fat and she’s like I like u better healthy. Also def like ‘ya you’ll like this Edwin, it’s good’ and removes the anxiety that can come with it. He’s also kinda like a cat, like if Portia eats it, then I’ll eat it, drinks out of her water cup, says he doesn’t want anything and then is asking for a bite, then two. I think portia’s love language is cooking and feeding her friends which she often just can’t afford to do, so she’s pleased. Portia also praises a lot, so he likes it, and wants her attention, so by the time they start dating he has kind adopted her attitude a bit more, confidence, etc. Portia on the other hand has a lot of abandonment issues and is used to being alone, taking care of herself or someone else like her dad when he’s sick or Seamus, and Edwin has always been mister reliable. He will complain but he’s showing up at 3 am to jumpstart ur car, Portia mentions her dishwasher is broken, he is fixing it at 6 am. He is early to everything, and he shows up for her every single time even before anything romantic/sexual had began. He also is very no nonsense and upfront with how he feels, he’s easy to read and says it, so it leaves out any anxiety. Plus I think he is pretty bossy too and demand she be with him all the time (clingy bf type, not in a toxic way) and she’s like wow ur annoying I like that.
