Dr. Ume Underhill

Edwin's mom is a beast in a 4'11 frame. The kids all blame her for being short and she is equally dismayed so she stands on tables etc to yell at her bad ass kids.

She's a reknowned sex therapist (v inspired by my love jean in sex education, but much much approachable and crunchier), had edwin young but just brought him to her phd program, now she travels the world giving talks and book signings. She's no filter, believes in frank conversations, and is very warm + quirky charming. She is also calculated and knows how to get ya, always knows just the right questions, can kinda pin ya if she actually is focused. normally shes in wine mom and tries to keep a work/life balance. I think she recognized pressing edwin about his problems would cause him to fold in more because hes stubborn so she's been biding her time to swoop in because she knows nothing will happen until he makes the first move. She prob cancels her book signing and practically swims home to come console him when he admits he got dumped by his first not gf and then puts a pause on her travels when she realizes she's missing out on a lot of her kids life. just cause she prepared them well, doesnt mean they dont still need her.

Can't decide what's funnier, if she is completely bewildered and missed the fact that edwin's been seeing someone (maybe shes sus somethings happening but shes halfway around the world and cant exactly press him) or if she is maybe aware he is seeing someone and is bewildered to find out its portia. I have a feeling the first one just cause i think shes always on top of EVERYTHING and then is kinda pursuing her own thing for a bit and realizes she isnt as on top of everything as she thought. Regardless, she's very pleased and is a really awesome mother in law tho she is a bit funny. her kids partners are her kids too plus prob is nicer to them than her own kids cause she knows her kids too well because she was an asshole like them in her youth
