A commission for last_of_workers

Maxtom was pouting as she walked through the desert looking for an entrance to Zeta-13. She eventually made it to a large wall that she couldn’t see the top of and followed alongside it until she made it to a large, mostly closed steel door with a ton of active turrets.

Maxtom was about to walk towards the door when suddenly an anomaly happened in front of the door. It wasn’t anything super dangerous; it just made a chair appear, but the turrets from the door didn’t care and started blasting it.

In seconds the chair was in a million pieces and raining down to the ground. Maxtom gulped; she didn’t want that. She was about to leave and head to a different place, but then she remembered her modes.

Her first mode might make it so the turrets don’t pay attention to her, meaning she could walk right in front of them, but she wasn’t sure. Her third mode would be the best for this situation, though, as she could just walk right through the wall.

It’s too bad she couldn’t use it right now because she used it earlier. Maxtom weighed her options for a moment: find another entrance or try her ability on these turrets. On one side, she might not find another entrance, and on the other, she could get blasted to pieces.

Under normal circumstances, she’d have chosen to look for another entrance, but she didn’t have time to waste, and she was curious about her powers. So Maxtom decided to test them out. She stuck her arm out as far as she could and slowly stepped into view of the turret’s cameras.

Once her hand was in view, she closed her eyes and prepared to have it blasted off, but nothing happened. Maxtom opened her eyes, surprised, and took a few more steps to be in full view of the cameras, and the turrets still didn’t go off.

Maxtom smiled and took a deep breath, as she had been holding it without realizing it. She then started to move around a ton in front of the cameras, and nothing happened, which pleased her a lot. Being a girl wasn’t the most fun, but having powers sure was.

Maxtom, having had her fun, walked over to the door and squeezed herself inside. Once through the door, Maxtom only took two steps forward; that's when she noticed a light flash by her foot. She looked down to see what it was.

She found it was a red laser, one that came out of one side of the entrance and went to the other. Maxtom suddenly heard something powering up and looked up. There were blasters from all directions aimed at her and about to shoot.

She had set off a trap. Maxtom gulped and attempted to run, but the second she lifted her foot up, they all fired. Maxtom had no time to get away. There was only one thing she could do. She once again activated mode three.

She went into subspace and continued running until she was out of danger. As soon as she was safe, she turned off mode three and fell to the ground. Her body felt exhausted, like she had just run ten miles, and her stomach was growling from hunger.

She had no energy in her system now, which wasn’t good. She needed to replenish it somehow, but there was no way there was food here; however, her body could work on more than just food now. Maxtom moved her head around looking for some sort of control panel.

Sure enough, there was one, but it was on the other side of the room, and Maxtom didn’t even have enough energy to stand up, so she had to slowly claw across the floor. Then, once she got to the panel, she struggled for a bit to lift herself up.

She ended up plopping down right on top of it when she finally got herself up, but that was enough. She took her finger and poked it in one of the holes meant for droids to use to connect to the system. Maxtom had no idea if this would even work, but she had hoped it would.

Once her finger was connected, she told her body to draw power directly from the power grid, and while she didn’t get any sort of confirmation it was happening, her body started to feel more and more uncomfortable, to the point it started to hurt a bit.

It would probably hurt a bit more if she did it under normal circumstances, but her body was so exhausted it was likely numbing a bit of it. After some time sitting there, Maxtom suddenly felt more energetic.

After about ten minutes she was back up to full power; that meant not only could she move again, but she could use subspace again without penalty. Maxtom removed her finger and smiled; she wasn’t about to use it willy-nilly, as she didn’t know how many charging places there were here.

However, it was still nice to know she could recharge like this. Maxtom, now recharged, got the hell out of the security station, as she didn’t want to find out what else it had lying in wait to kill intruders, even ones that can’t be noticed normally.

Maxtom made her way into the tunnels that lead to other areas and started to look for some sort of indication of where the center is located. She ended up in an area that seemed to have once been for farm animals.

However, now all the pens and stables were broken down, so the animals inside them in the past likely either got free, starved, or were taken by the anomalies. At least that was what Maxtom thought as she walked through the area.

Once she was in the middle of the area, she started to smell something foul, like a sewer; following the smell, she heard a horrendous noise. It was sort of like a pig squeal mixed with a hyena's laugh but with the deepest voice possible.

Maxtom froze in place and looked around. She had no idea what it was, but if it was a monster like she thought it was, if she stood still and focused on mode two, it wouldn't notice her and attack her. It was a good thing she did, as seconds later a massive creature came running out after something.

The creature was pig-shaped but nearly ten feet tall and eight feet wide. It had rows of sharp teeth that were spinning in its mouth, black eyes with red sclera, peeling pink skin with yellow veins popping out all over, and a long, curled tail with spikes all over it.

Maxtom started sweating when she saw it; it looked like a creature from a child's bad dream. She had no idea what it was, perhaps once a normal pig or, in fact, a monster pulled from someone’s bad dream by an anomaly, which would be bad; it could have tons of unknown abilities.

Maxtom continued to stay still but looked toward what the pig was chasing. Her eyes got wide when she realized it was a small dog. It was likely chasing it in order to eat its first meal in over a hundred years.

The longer she stared at the Nightmare Pig chasing the dog, the more and more it filled her with fear, and it got to the point where she couldn’t focus on keeping mode two active. So it stopped working, which caused the Nightmare Pig to stop immediately.

It started to sniff the air like someone would do when entering a room that had a freshly baked pie in it. It then turned around and looked at Maxtom. As it stared into her eyes, she felt her body become paralyzed with fear.

That only made the Nightmare Pig salivate, almost like it wasn’t looking to feed on people or animals, but the fear they produce when in proximity to it. Maxtom could tell the Nightmare Pig was about to charge at her, but she still couldn’t move.

Suddenly the dog that the Nightmare Pig had been chasing ran by it and right to Maxtom’s legs. It started to bark, bite her foot, and try to pull her away. That snapped Maxtom out of her paralysis, and she looked at the dog.

She then heard the pick stomping its foot, getting ready to charge at them and feed on their fear. Maxtom was still too afraid to make mode two work, but even if she could, that would leave the dog to fend for itself. As much as she likes being alone, she’d never abandon this dog like that.

So with no other plan, Maxtom grabbed the dog and started running, which prompted the Nightmare Pig to chase them, letting out its terrible squeal. Maxtom’s fear only continued to grow, but she did her best to push through it in order to save herself and the dog.

Maxtom ran around the whole area trying to get away from it, but nothing seemed to stop the Nightmare Pig. Buildings, walls, even tight spaces—it just ran through them all, breaking them apart like it’s skin was indestructible and its strength knew no bounds.

Maxtom had no idea what to do, and she knew she couldn’t outrun this thing forever. She had to do something, but the only mode that might even have a chance would be mode three, but she wasn’t sure she could transport something alongside her.

She could still use it once safely, so perhaps it was worth trying. Maxtom looked down at the puppy and kissed it on the head once again, hoping things worked out. Maxtom activated mode three and saw herself enter subspace.

She then looked down at the dog in her arms to see if it entered with her. Maxtom nearly started celebrating when she noticed it was in with her. She stopped running, which freaked the dog out for a moment, until it noticed the Nightmare Pig run right through them.

The Nightmare Pig was confused, then turned around and looked back and forth looking for them, but being invisible, it couldn’t see them anymore. At least that would be the case if it were some sort of normal monster.

The Nightmare Pig started to sniff again, and as it did, it got closer and closer to Maxtom and the dog she was holding. Maxtom’s fear began to grow again as she realized it could smell her fear, even in subspace.

That was bad; she only had a limited amount of time in subspace, which means she needed to get herself and the dog to safety now. Maxtom started running again, and the Nightmare Pig followed closely behind them, waiting for the moment they left subspace.

Maxtom ran towards a random wall and just went right through it, not even sure if there was anything on the other side but rock. She hoped if she continued to run, she’d make it to a new room before exiting subspace and getting trapped.

Luckily, after thirty feet of stone, Maxtom made it to a room, and luckily it was thick enough that the dumb pork chop couldn’t bust through it and get to them. Now safe, the dog jumped out of Maxtom’s arms, which caused it to exit subspace.

So her mode three allows her to take others with her, as long as she is holding them; that was good to know. Maxtom, happy to be safe, deactivated mode three and instantly felt strange. Her whole body felt exhausted again, and she was hungry.

Maxtom was confused, as that was the first use since her recharge; she should be fine right now. Maxtom fell to the floor, and the dog, worried for her, came over and started to lick her face, and that’s when she realized it. It must cost more energy to bring someone else with her.

One seemed okay, but if she did two, she’d likely pass out immediately. Maxtom yawned, patted the dog on the head, and told it not to worry. She was alright; she just needed to recharge. She then looked around for a place to charge, but there wasn’t any.

So it seems instead she was going to sit here until she regained enough energy to stand up and move a bit. Maxtom sighed and closed her eyes. The dog had no idea what was happening but went along with it. It lay next to her and curled up into a ball, more than happy to wait for its new friend.

I think Zeta-13 scares me. It's working almost like the human body. It has things (that being the captains) inside it, and it wants them out. The captains are very lucky that so far the only thing it did to them was turn them into robot girls.

I really like this story. You picked the enemy for Maxtom very well, because what could be a more dangerous enemy for a master of stealth than a creature that can see you despite stealth! And this is a very clever decision with emotions! ... I really began to fear this nightmare suite! ... In fact, Maxtom managed to escape miraculously (or rather thanks to the side effect of her 3 modes) and this really shows that Zeta-13 knows how to pick the RIGHT opponents for captains! ... and another thing ... THE DOG IN THIS STORY IS JUST SUPER GOOD!!! I did not think about it, but I think that this kind of companion can really help Maxtom on the journey to the center of Zeta-13
